Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr Smith,
I am writing to introduce myself and suggest some arrangements for our first meeting. My name is Nitin Chavda, I am newly hired in production department, and currenly working as a plant operator. I have done masters in chemical engineering and I have over 3 years of experience in chemical manufacturing environment.
I am delighted to have you as my mentor and appreciate the fact that our company provides such an incentive to get a mentor for career guide. I got your details through my company email and also did some research about your background. I think having you as my mentor would significantly increase my knowledge in chemical processes and it could not be more better that you would guide me through my career path; because, you have similiar background as me. In fact there are many things which I need to discuss with you.
With your permission, I would like to arrange our first meeting as a mentor and a student. I can book a meeting room next week in our company' main building if you are available. Please send me your availibility next week to my email [redacted email].
I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Nitin Chavda.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You successfully covered all three bullet points required in the prompt. You introduced yourself, mentioned your background (holding a master's in chemical engineering and three years of experience), explained the help you hope to receive (increasing knowledge in chemical processes and career guidance), and suggested arrangements for a first meeting in a company meeting room next week. Your ideas are relevant and appropriately addressed to the mentor. To achieve a higher band, you could have extended and fully developed your ideas by giving more specific details about the types of chemical processes you wish to focus on or elaborating further on what you hope to learn from your mentor's specific background.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the first introduces you and outlines your background, the second discusses your expectations for the mentorship, and the third proposes meeting arrangements. You used appropriate cohesive devices and referencing, such as 'I got your details through my company email and also did some research about your background.' Paragraphing is managed well. To reach a higher band, you could ensure that transitional phrases between sentences are used even more naturally, avoiding slightly repetitive sentence openings and ensuring seamless progression from one idea to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'plant operator', 'chemical engineering', and 'chemical manufacturing environment'. You also attempted less common vocabulary like 'significantly increase'. However, there are some word-choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'currenly' instead of 'currently', 'masters' instead of a master's degree, and the awkward phrasing 'could not be more better' and 'career guide' instead of career guidance. To improve your lexical score, focus on eliminating spelling errors and refining collocations to sound more natural and precise in a professional context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over your writing with frequent error-free sentences, such as 'I am writing to introduce myself and suggest some arrangements for our first meeting.' Grammar and punctuation do not impede communication overall. However, there are some grammatical errors and awkward structures, including missing articles ('in production department' instead of in the production department) and punctuation issues, such as the semicolon misuse in '; because, you have similiar background as me.' To reach a higher band, you need to reduce grammatical errors and increase the variety and accuracy of your complex sentence structures.
