Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to introduce my self as I am a new employee at our workplace. Your name have been given to me with details since you are my mentor. My name is Stuti Dabhi. I am grateful to have you as my mentor.
I have completed my graduation with distinction in 2023. I have two years of teaching experience. In these two years I have completed one research study. Furthermore, I was a member of organizing committee in international conference arraged by CVM.
I am specifically looking for guidance in research. The statistics in the end of study really confuses me, that which formula should I apply. Moreover, I would like to publish my reaserch study, if you could help me find some reputed publishers would be good.
I believe that we should meet to know each other. If you allow me, I can pick you at your office and we can talk at our college cafe.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, addressing your background, the help you hope to receive from your mentor, and arrangements for your first meeting. However, some aspects of the task are developed more fully than others. For instance, your explanation of previous studies and work experience is somewhat general, stating simply that you have two years of teaching experience and completed one research study without providing broader context. The details regarding the help you need with statistics and publishers are clearer and more relevant, and the suggestion to meet at the college cafe is appropriate. To achieve a higher level, you would need to extend and fully develop all bullet points with richer supporting details and a more consistent depth of discussion throughout the entire letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas, as each paragraph corresponds clearly to a specific bullet point in the prompt. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the introduction, background, expectations, and meeting proposal. Cohesive devices are generally present, but referencing and linking are at times mechanical or slightly basic, such as the repetitive use of 'In these two years' and 'Moreover'. To move further into the higher bands, you should demonstrate a more flexible and varied use of cohesive devices, ensuring that transitions between sentences and paragraphs flow more naturally without relying on simple additive connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message about your professional background and academic goals. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'distinction', 'organizing committee', and 'reputed publishers', which shows an effort to expand your lexical range. However, there are some word-choice and spelling inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as 'arraged' instead of 'arranged', 'reaserch' instead of 'research', and awkward phrasing like 'The statistics in the end of study really confuses me'. These minor slips do not impede communication, but to reach the next band, you need to use a wider range of less common lexical items with greater precision and stylistic awareness, while eliminating spelling errors entirely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, though they rarely impede communication. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'Your name have been given' instead of 'has been given', article omissions such as 'in international conference', and structural awkwardness like 'that which formula should I apply'. Punctuation and prepositions also show occasional instability. To achieve a higher band, you would need to produce a greater frequency of error-free sentences while maintaining a strong control over complex grammatical structures and precise syntactic arrangements.
