Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to express my interest in choosing Dr. Hania as my mentor. I have completed my bachelor of physiotherapy from Ahmedabad University, and I have two years of professional work experience in the field of physiotherapy.
I would be greatful if I could have Dr. Hania as mentor, because I would like to learn advance technique to treat peadiatric patients. I believe Dr. Hania has great expertise to treat Spastic pediatric patients as well as she also has received gold medal in master of physiotherapy in neuropediatric. Thus, I belive his knowledge and hands-on skills help me lot to treat pediatric patients.
I would like to suggest arranging our first meeting at a convenient time for you. We could me at a din clinic or quiet cafe, whichever you prefer. I would like to introduce myself and and a discuss my professional goals. I am flexible with the date and time and would be happy to adjust according to your availability,
I hope you will consider my request, and agree to become my mentor. I look forward to meeting you soon.
Yours Sincerely,
Bijal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering the outline of previous studies and work experience, explaining the expected help from the mentor, and suggesting arrangements for a first meeting. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the introduction of studies and experience in the first paragraph is somewhat brief and generalized ("two years of professional work experience"), whereas the explanation of the hope for mentorship is expanded with specific details regarding pediatric patients. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a workplace colleague, though addressing it to "Dear Sir" is slightly mismatched given that the prompt mentions the mentor's details are already provided, and a specific name or "Dear Mentor" would be more natural. Overall, the requirements of the task are adequately fulfilled, placing this response securely in this band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly into paragraphs, with each paragraph serving a distinct function: introducing background, stating goals and reasons for choosing the mentor, proposing meeting arrangements, and concluding politely. Cohesive devices such as "I am writing this letter", "I would be greatful if", "Thus", and "I would like to suggest" are used effectively to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, contributing to a coherent overall arrangement that makes the letter easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the necessary professional concepts related to physiotherapy. The writer attempts some less common and topic-specific vocabulary, such as "professional work experience", "paediatric patients", "neuropediatric", and "hands-on skills". However, there are some noticeable word choice and word form errors throughout the text, such as spelling "greatful" instead of 'grateful', writing "advance technique" instead of 'advanced techniques', using "peadiatric" instead of 'paediatric', and writing "din clinic" likely meant to be 'dental clinic' or 'day clinic'. Additionally, there is a pronoun inconsistency when shifting from addressing the mentor directly to referring to him in the third person ("help me lot to treat pediatric patients. I would like to suggest arranging our first meeting at a convenient time for you"). These lexical slips do not impede communication but prevent the score from rising higher.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences using subordinating conjunctions and relative clauses, such as "I have completed my bachelor of physiotherapy from Ahmedabad University, and I have two years of professional work experience..." and "...because I would like to learn advance technique to treat peadiatric patients." There are some grammatical errors and typos present, including missing articles and prepositions (e.g., "master of physiotherapy in neuropediatric" instead of 'a master's degree in neuropediatrics'), subject-verb agreement issues ("Dr. Hania has great expertise... as well as she also has received... Thus, I belive his knowledge... help me"), and punctuation or typing slips like double connecting words ("and and a discuss"). Despite these errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout.
