Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr patel,

The reason of my writing this letter is to intoduce myself and to give an outline of my work experience as well as my future goals, so that it will give you better understanding of my knowledge level and my future embitions which evwntually help you guide me effectively throughout the mentorship.

My educational background consist of bachelor degree in "Mechanical engineering" and post graduation degree in "Quality engineering management". As my study is quite concentrated in manufacuring industries and operations, i an willing to get more knowledge towards this industry itself. In adition i have been working in food manufacturing plant from last 1 year as a "Maintenance Technician". Although there are some of the areas i want to improve my skills such as PLC, automation and purchasing.

My expectations from a mentor is to clear my doughts about which path should i follow and what areas i need to pay more attention as to gain excessive knowledge which could help me achive my future goals effectively.

As we are in end of weekdays if we could have a meeting at the nearby coffee place after work, let me know if this works for you and if not you can suggest a different time, i'll make sure to make my self available for the meeting.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Your's faithfully,

Parimal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully addressed all parts of the task. You gave a clear outline of your educational background and work experience in your second paragraph, mentioning your degrees in mechanical and quality engineering alongside your current role as a Maintenance Technician. You also explained what help you hope to receive from your mentor, specifically mentioning guidance on technical areas like PLC and career direction. Finally, you suggested a practical arrangement for a first meeting over coffee. Your ideas are well-supported and extended throughout the letter, giving a clear and purposeful tone appropriate for the context. While some bullet points are slightly more developed than others, all requirements are thoroughly covered.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from your initial introduction to your background, expectations, and finally the meeting proposal. You used paragraphs effectively to separate each main topic, and you integrated cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'In adition', and 'As we are in end of weekdays' to link your ideas. Although a few of these transitions are slightly mechanical, the overall progression is clear and easy to follow. To move to a higher band, you could aim for a more seamless and flexible use of cohesive devices without relying on standard formulaic connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common business and technical items such as 'mentorship', 'maintenance technician', and 'manufacturing plant'. However, there are some spelling and word-choice errors that slightly detract from precision, such as 'intoduce', 'embitions', 'evwntually', 'manufacuring', 'Adition', and 'doughts'. Despite these occasional slips, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and adequately represents your professional background without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, such as conditional and relative clauses ('if we could have a meeting...', 'which could help me achive...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('bachelor degree' instead of 'a bachelor degree'), incorrect prepositions ('from last 1 year' instead of 'for the last year'), and minor capitalization issues. However, these errors do not impede communication and you maintain control over the basic sentence structure. To reach a higher band, you need to reduce grammatical errors and increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences.
