Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I hope you are doing well. My name is Harjit Kaur, and I have recently joined the company as a Customer Service Representative. I am writing to introduce myself and to thank you for agreeing to be my mentor.

Regarding my background, I completed a Bachelor of Computer Applications in India and am currently pursuing Project Management and Professional Communication studies in Canada. In terms of work experience, I have worked in customer service and cashier roles for several years. These positions helped me develop strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.

As I am new to the organization, I would appreciate your guidance on understanding the company's culture, expectations, and career development opportunities. I would also be grateful for any advice on improving my performance and building the skills necessary for future advancement within the company.

If possible, I would like to arrange a meeting with you next week. We could meet during a lunch break or after work at a time that is convenient for you. Alternatively, we could have an online meeting if that would be easier. Please let me know your preferred date and time.

I look forward to meeting you and learning from your experience.

Yours sincerely,

Harjit Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response covers all parts of the prompt exceptionally well and fully satisfies the requirements of this letter. You successfully introduce yourself, provide a clear and concise outline of your previous studies in India and Canada alongside your relevant customer service experience, and explain precisely what kind of help you hope to receive from your mentor, such as understanding company culture and developing career skills. Furthermore, you make practical suggestions for a first meeting by offering multiple flexible options like meeting during lunch, after work, or online. The tone is entirely appropriate for a professional workplace context, and all ideas are well-developed and relevant throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.5

The letter exhibits logical sequencing and smooth progression of ideas from start to finish. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the initial introduction and purpose of writing in the first paragraph, to background and career goals in the middle paragraphs, and finally to scheduling the meeting. Cohesive devices such as 'Regarding my background', 'As I am new to the organization', and 'Alternatively' are used naturally and effectively to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is fully appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity and professional structure of the correspondence.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.5

You demonstrate a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional setting. Less common lexical items and collocations are used skillfully, such as 'Customer Service Representative', 'pursuing Project Management and Professional Communication studies', and 'career development opportunities'. Word choice and spelling are accurate throughout, with only occasional minor slips. To push toward the highest band, you could incorporate even more idiomatic or highly sophisticated professional phrasings, though your current control of vocabulary is already strong and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

The writing features a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences used with a high degree of control. The vast majority of your sentences are completely error-free, showcasing excellent command of verb tenses, article usage, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement. For instance, complex constructions like 'As I am new to the organization, I would appreciate your guidance on understanding the company's culture...' and 'If possible, I would like to arrange a meeting with you next week' are structured accurately and punctuated correctly. Minor errors are virtually absent, reflecting an advanced command of grammar.
