Dear....... ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
I am writing this letter as my formal introduction since you have been chosen as my mentor.
My name is Harry, I am a tech enthusiast , graduated from University of London in 2019. After completing my studies, i worked as an intern for Apple under research and development department. Although, my role was minuscule, I was lucky enough to gain substantial corporate experience at young age. However, there was several areas i would require your guidance.
Last week I was transferred to business and sales department, which requires enhanced social and collaborative skills. As you know, in corporate office one does not require to deal with customers and contractors. I would hope you will be able to assist me into developing these set of skills. I have heard from my peers, they are set meeting with their mentors in upcoming weeks.
I would like to suggest a timing that is suitable for us both. This week on Friday afternoon seems suitable time for meeting, as my schedule is free. Would you be able to attend it? please reply to this letter at your earliest convenience.
With regards,
Harry

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task. You provide a brief outline of your previous studies and work experience by mentioning your degree from the University of London and your internship at Apple in the research and development department. You also clearly explain what help you hope your mentor can give, specifically mentioning assistance with developing social and collaborative skills for your transition into the business and sales department. Additionally, you suggest arrangements for a first meeting by proposing Friday afternoon. While all bullet points are addressed, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation of your past role and the exact nature of the help needed could have been extended further. However, the tone is appropriate for a workplace letter, fully meeting the lower requirements while touching upon aspects of a more fully developed response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical flow from your introduction to your background, your current needs, and finally your meeting proposal. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as your work history in the second paragraph and your future meetings in the third. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty. For instance, transitional phrases like 'Although, my role was minuscule' and 'However, there was several areas' disrupt the natural progression of ideas. Referencing and referencing devices are generally functional, but smoother linking words would elevate the cohesion of the text to a higher level. Overall, the message is easy to follow despite these mechanical lapses in cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'enthusiast', 'minuscule', and 'substantial corporate experience'. However, there are some word-choice and collocation inaccuracies that prevent a higher score. For example, writing 'at young age' misses an article, and 'there was several areas' contains a subject-verb agreement error stemming from vocabulary usage. You also used 'assist me into developing' instead of the standard collocation 'assist me in developing'. Spelling is generally accurate, and your lexical choices do not impede communication, but refining these collocations and expanding your precise vocabulary use will help you achieve greater flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
Your response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and subordinate clauses like 'After completing my studies, i worked as...' and 'As you know, in corporate office one does not...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Noticeable errors include capitalization issues ('i' instead of 'I'), punctuation lapses (missing commas or misplaced ones), and subject-verb agreement slips such as 'there was several areas i would require'. You also missed articles in phrases like 'at young age'. These errors represent typical patterns for this level, where simple structures are mostly accurate, but attempts at complex patterns occasionally introduce minor structural slips.
