Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for a general correspondence task. You introduce yourself appropriately, give a brief outline of your previous studies and work experience by mentioning your bachelor's degree in biology and your three years at Ecolab, explain what help you hope to receive regarding your career and publishing your work, and suggest arrangements for a first meeting. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or less clear, such as the exact details of the mentoring support and the formatting of the meeting proposal, which prevents the response from achieving a higher score. Nonetheless, all bullet points are adequately covered and the tone is mostly appropriate for a professional introductory letter to a mentor.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear sequence of ideas that guide the reader through your introduction, background, expectations, and meeting proposal. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct topics, showcasing characteristics of higher bands by structuring the message logically. Cohesive devices and referencing are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, such as in the transitions between paragraphs and pronouns like 'If mentor support us', but the progression remains logical overall. To reach the next level, cohesive devices could be used more flexibly and referencing within sentences could be managed with greater precision to ensure smoother transitions from one idea to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to use less common items related to a workplace and academic environment, such as 'bachelor's degree' and 'experience'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that affect precision, such as 'Medem' instead of 'Madam', 'bechlor's', and awkward phrasing like 'give me a right path'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. To improve, you need to expand your control of collocations and ensure accurate spelling and word forms, moving away from repetitive and basic expressions toward more sophisticated and precise professional vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, attempting various structures to convey your message. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('bechlor's degree'), incorrect verb patterns ('it would be a great that my mentor will me'), and slight prepositional inaccuracies, but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of simple sentences remain clear. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and improve your control over verb tenses, agreement, and dependent clauses, ensuring greater accuracy across more sophisticated sentence patterns.
