Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Samson,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to provide a formal introduction of myself to you.

I am highly oblidged to work under your mentorship as your performance has always been on the top in the company. I have done graduation in Business Administration and have an experience of 2 years, as a customer service assossiate in the retail industry. I have developed a lot of skills by working there such as team work, decision making, customer handling and multi-tasking.

I am expecting that this mentorship period will be a life-long learning experience for me. I would be interested in knowing the different softwares that are used at our workplace to complete most of the tasks. Along with this, I am looking forward for your consistent guidance and rectification of any mistakes that I might make initially.

I understand that your routine is very hectic and it is not easy for you to spare time for anything apart from work. Therefore, I wanted to request you if we can meet next monday in the office cafe during the lunch hour.

I look forward to your reply.

Yours faithfully,

Neha George

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You provide a clear outline of your previous studies in Business Administration and work experience as a customer service associate. You also clearly explain the help you hope to receive, such as learning workplace software and getting feedback on mistakes, and you suggest a specific arrangement for your first meeting next Monday in the office cafe. While all parts are addressed with a clear tone, some ideas like the request for software training could be extended further to reach a higher level of detail and development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the introduction to your background, your expectations for the mentorship, and finally the meeting proposal. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'Along with this' and 'Therefore', to connect your ideas. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, maintaining a standard formal letter structure, though slightly more sophisticated transitional phrases would elevate the cohesion further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message, though it contains some spelling errors and imprecise word choices. For example, 'oblidged' is misspelled and 'assossiate' contains an error. You make some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'mentorship' and 'hectic', but inaccuracies in spelling and word choice prevent the vocabulary score from being higher. Communication is never impeded, but precision and stylistic control need more consistency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You demonstrate good control of grammar and punctuation, using a variety of complex structures alongside simpler forms. Frequent error-free sentences are present, such as 'I understand that your routine is very hectic and it is not easy for you to spare time for anything apart from work.' Minor slips occur, such as the unnecessary preposition in 'looking forward for your consistent guidance' where 'to' is required, but overall your grammatical control is solid and punctuation is handled well throughout.
