Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. My name is Nirma Shaheen and I have recently joined the Awan Sports as a lab manager. I was informed by the HR earlier morning that you have been assigned my mentor for two months.
My educational backround is Polymer Engineering and I have two years of work experience as a assistance lab manager. In my previours role, I was responsible for maintaing the documentation of quality management system and performing risk assessments for lab audits.
My current job role involves overseeing the lab's day-to day operations along with managing the compliance requirements related to testing. Annually, four audits are conducted in the lab by 3rd party labs. As you have been an internal auditor for the company for past 8 years, I believe your expertise in auditing will be beneficial for me. Before the actual audits, if you could conduc internal audits of the lab, if would be a great way to identifiy the lab's areas of improvement.
Since lab audit is scheduled for next month, it would be great to have a meeting with you next monday. We would be able to discuss all the relevant points and make a road map to improve weak points of the lab. Please let me know if this time slot suits your schedule or we can plan any other day.
I looking forward to your positive feedback.
Kind regards,
Nirma Shaheen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt in a clear and appropriate manner. You introduced yourself effectively, provided a brief outline of your previous studies and work experience, explained the specific help you hope to receive regarding internal audits, and suggested a concrete arrangement for your first meeting next Monday. Your ideas are well-extended and supported throughout the letter, reflecting a clear purpose. To achieve a higher level, you could have ensured every part was developed with even greater depth and nuance, avoiding minor generalisations. However, all requirements of the bullet points are fully covered, presenting a well-rounded and relevant message for a workplace context.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from start to finish. You begin with an appropriate greeting, transition smoothly into your professional background, outline your current responsibilities and expectations for mentorship, and conclude with actionable meeting arrangements. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as your background versus your specific request for help. Cohesive devices like 'Since lab audit is scheduled for next month' and 'Before the actual audits' are used effectively to guide the reader. To move towards top bands, cohesion could be made slightly less predictable, avoiding minor mechanical patterns and ensuring seamless transitions across all sentence boundaries.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You display an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a workplace context, successfully attempting less common items such as 'compliance requirements', 'risk assessments', and 'internal auditor'. There are, however, a few spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'backround' instead of background, 'assistance' instead of assistant, 'previours' instead of previous, 'maintaing' instead of maintaining, 'conduc' instead of conduct, and 'identifiy' instead of identify. While these errors do not impede communication, they highlight the need for greater precision in spelling and word forms to fully reach the next standard.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures like 'if you could conduct internal audits of the lab, it would be a great way to identify the lab's areas of improvement.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('joined the Awan Sports' instead of joined Awan Sports, 'assigned my mentor' instead of assigned as my mentor), an unnecessary article in 'earlier morning', and a minor preposition issue in 'for past 8 years'. These errors rarely impede communication and there are many well-formed sentences. To reach a higher level, you would need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and maintain strict control over articles and prepositions.
