Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr Smith
Hope you are doing well. I am a new joinee and i got my position after the completion of internship with the company arranged by my educational institute. I have done my masters in Business and marketing and worked for six months as a intern and performed numerous job duties such as organising documents, assisted the marketing department with the projects and preparation of presentations for meeting.
After the accomplishment of the internship I got the position as an assistant in marketing department. On my orientation I got to know about you and I believe that it is a great chance for me to have you as my mentor who can help me with various aspects which will carve my skills more nicely. I would appreciate your help with advice about the team management, organization and communication skills.
I was hoping to have a meeting at the cafeteria in office breaktimes.Hope to hear back soon.
Your sincerely
Rajni

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully introducing the writer and covering the three required bullet points. The background is established by mentioning previous studies and the internship experience, and the purpose of the mentorship is outlined by expressing a desire for help with team management, organization, and communication skills. Furthermore, a suggestion for a first meeting at the cafeteria during office break times is clearly stated. However, some bullet points remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation of the help hoped from the mentor could be extended with more specific professional goals. The tone is appropriately polite and semi-formal, satisfying the requirements for this letter format.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the background, expectations, and finally the meeting suggestion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each main topic. Cohesive devices are evident, such as 'After the accomplishment of the internship' and 'On my orientation', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. For example, sentences within paragraphs could be linked more fluidly to achieve a higher level of cohesion. Overall, the organization is easy to follow and meets the expectations for a structured message.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a workplace context, including terms like 'orientation', 'presentations', and 'colleagues'. There are several noticeable vocabulary and word choice inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as 'new joinee' instead of 'new recruit' or 'new employee', 'worked for six months as a intern' instead of 'as an intern', and 'carve my skills more nicely' which is an unnatural collocation. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the presence of these restricted word choices and minor collocation errors places this aspect firmly in the intermediate range, showing an attempt at less common vocabulary with some inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully, as seen in '...who can help me with various aspects which will carve my skills more nicely.' There are some grammar and punctuation errors present, such as missing articles ('at the cafeteria in office breaktimes' instead of 'in office break times' and 'as a intern' instead of 'as an intern'), missing commas in greetings and closings ('Dear Mr Smith' and 'Your sincerely'), and a run-on sentence structure in the opening paragraph. However, these errors are relatively minor and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to understand the message without difficulty.
