Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter successfully covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. You introduce yourself properly to your mentor, provide an outline of your previous studies and work experience in civil engineering at JLL India Ltd, explain what help you hope to receive regarding structural designing software, and suggest arranging your schedules for a first meeting. However, some parts of the task are slightly more developed than others. For example, the outline of your background and your request for help are clear, but the suggestion for the first meeting is somewhat vague, focusing more on flexibility rather than proposing a specific time or method to connect. To reach a higher level, all bullet points would need to be fully extended with clearer specific details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from your introduction and background to your learning goals and meeting suggestions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each main topic, such as your work history and your specific areas of interest. You use some cohesive devices and referencing adequately throughout the text, such as 'hence', 'Right after my studies', and 'When it comes to'. However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, and referencing in sentences like 'it was iadviced to me that every new employees' lacks smooth flow. This performance demonstrates strong foundational organisation, while reaching the next band requires smoother transitions and more flexible, natural paragraph linking.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to successfully communicate your background as a civil engineer and your professional goals. You attempt some less common vocabulary items such as 'prestigious', 'procurment', and 'structural designing', which shows an effort to expand your range. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, including 'entusiastic' instead of 'enthusiastic', 'iadviced' instead of 'advised', 'gratuation' instead of 'graduation', 'plaement' instead of 'placement', and 'managment' instead of 'management'. Additionally, phrases like 'reach heights and endavours' contain unnatural collocations. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision in spelling and word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms to express your thoughts to your mentor, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'As a new employee of this company it was iadviced to me that every new employees will have an experienced colleague who would be advicing...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as capitalization issues at the beginning of sentences (e.g., 'i would be very grateful'), subject-verb agreement issues like 'every new employees will', and awkward tense usage in 'it was iadviced to me'. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To achieve a higher band, you would need to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate tighter control over punctuation and article usage.
