Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You successfully cover all parts of the task prompt, addressing the reader with an appropriate introductory tone and fulfilling the three main bullet points. You provide an outline of your educational background and work experience, mentioning your diploma course at Algoma University and your customer service role. You also explain the kind of help you hope to receive, such as understanding company criteria, responsibilities, and expectations, and you suggest workable arrangements for a first meeting by offering options for next week. However, some ideas are a bit under-developed, particularly the explanation of your previous duties, which could have been expanded to fully flesh out the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure that addresses each part of the prompt in sequence. You use basic paragraphing effectively to separate your introduction, background, expectations, and meeting proposals. Nevertheless, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical due to weak transitional links between sentences. For instance, the transition between discussing your past work experience and stating your expectations for your mentor feels slightly abrupt. Additionally, referencing is not always completely clear, such as the pronoun use in phrases like 'you are my mentor as i need your help in guiedness', which slightly obscures the logical connection between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use an adequate vocabulary range to communicate your message effectively for the task, attempting some less common words and workplace-related terms such as 'responsibilities', 'expectations', and 'environment'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text that stem from a limited lexical control. Examples include 'deploma' instead of diploma, 'resourse' instead of resource, 'bussiness' instead of business, 'cratiries' instead of criteria, and 'convinenet' instead of convenient. While these vocabulary and spelling mistakes do not completely impede communication, they highlight the need for greater precision and care with less common lexical items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to structure your ideas beyond basic clauses. You successfully incorporate modal verbs and dependent clauses, such as 'if you arrange a meeting with me next week' and 'although i would be happy to fit around your schedule'. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including missing capitalization for pronouns like 'i', minor preposition issues such as 'working as a customer service' instead of 'working in customer service', and tense inconsistencies. Fortunately, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede the reader's overall understanding of your message.
