Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I have been informed at the orientation day that you are about to mentor my journey in this company, so I think to introduce myself a little here. I did a Registered Practical Nursing progam in 2025. Later, I worked as a Registered Nurse in a long term care home for a one year. To expand my experience, I applied in a hospital setting where you are my senior and fortunately I got hired.
Undoubtedly, working in the hospital would be demanding in terms of longer shifts as in nursing homes, I was committed to eight hours a day and here I would be entitled for twelve hours a day. Therefore, I would like to know how to manage work and life at the same time. Additionally, I would love to recieve honest reviews and comments on my performance. During work if I would stumble please guide me to make it happen.
Over and above, it would be amazing if you could spare a time for a face-to-face meeting with me. I am absolutely comfortable wherever you would wish to fix a meeting whether at workplace in official hours or somewhere outside.
It would be appreciated if you let me know when and where we can meet.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Jasleen Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You successfully cover all parts of the task required for a letter to a workplace mentor. You give a brief outline of your previous background by mentioning that you completed a Registered Practical Nursing program in 2025 and worked in a long term care home. You also explain the help you hope to receive, such as managing work-life balance for twelve-hour shifts and receiving honest feedback on performance. Furthermore, you suggest arrangements for a first meeting by offering a face-to-face discussion. However, while all bullet points are addressed, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation of what help you need could be extended further to reach a higher level. Your tone is generally appropriate for a professional workplace communication.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You manage paragraphing well by separating your introduction, your background and expectations, your meeting suggestions, and your sign-off into distinct, readable sections. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect your ideas, such as using 'Therefore' to link your shift length to your need for advice on work-life balance, and 'Additionally' to introduce your desire for performance reviews. Although referencing and linking are sometimes a bit mechanical rather than entirely seamless, the overall progression of information is easy to follow and meets the criteria for a well-structured response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common and workplace-specific terms such as 'orientation day', 'long term care home', 'hospital setting', and 'work-life balance'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, word form, and spelling that reflect this level. For instance, you write 'progam' instead of 'program', 'for a one year' instead of 'for one year', and 'recieve' instead of 'receive'. You also use phrases like 'spare a time', which is slightly unnatural compared to 'spare some time'. These lexical slips do not impede communication, but eliminating them and using more precise collocations would elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout your letter, handling structures like subordinate clauses fairly well, as seen in 'I applied in a hospital setting where you are my senior and fortunately I got hired.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('in long term care home') and awkward prepositional usage ('applied in a hospital setting' instead of 'applied to'). You also have minor phrasing issues in conditional or hypothetical constructions, such as 'During work if I would stumble please guide me'. Nonetheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede the reader's understanding of your message.
