Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Arsh,
I hope you are doing well. This letter is to introduce myself to you as you are assigned as my mentor and hope if we can arrange an in-person meeting.
I am new to this sector and joined Hyatt Residency a week ago. I completed a 2-year diploma in Early Childhood Education and later worked as an educator for 3 years at a Montessori school. Last year, I enrolled myself in a 6-month hospitality course including 2 months of internship in Fairmont hotel. This not only provided me hands-on experience in a professional setting but also allowed me to change my profession.
As you are an experienced person and have been working in this company for a decade. I will appreciate your assistance in settling down in work culture, and learn some skills such as communication, handling tasks and so on to establish myself smoothly.
Moreover, I was hoping if we can have a face-to-face interaction and get to know each other personally. Please provide me with your available schedule so we can arrange our first meeting.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You successfully addressed all parts of the letter-writing task by providing a clear opening, outlining your previous background in education and hospitality, explaining what type of guidance you hope to receive from your mentor, and suggesting a plan for your first face-to-face meeting. Your ideas are well-supported, though certain details, such as the specific skills you wish to develop, could have been extended slightly further to fully unlock higher-level development. Overall, your tone is appropriately polite and professional for a workplace introduction, maintaining a clear purpose throughout the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You make effective use of paragraphing, with each paragraph dedicated to a distinct purpose, such as background, expectations, and meeting arrangements. Cohesive devices are generally used well to guide the reader through your ideas, as seen in transitions like 'Moreover'. While referencing and cohesion are mostly clear, occasional minor mechanical links could be varied slightly to achieve an even more natural flow, which aligns well with the standards expected at this level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message with adequate precision, incorporating less common workplace terms such as 'professional setting' and 'work culture'. However, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as writing 'as you are assigned' instead of 'have been assigned', and 'in Fairmont hotel' instead of 'at Fairmont hotel'. These minor lexical slips do not impede communication, but eliminating them and attempting a slightly wider variety of sophisticated phrasing will help elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You successfully utilise a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over your overall sentence structure. There are frequent error-free sentences, such as your opening and closing statements, and your use of relative clauses is commendable. However, a few minor grammatical errors persist, such as sentence fragment issues and preposition choices, for instance writing 'settling down in work culture' omitting the necessary article, and 'and learn some skills' which disrupts parallel verb forms. These errors rarely impede communication and represent a solid foundation of grammatical control.
