Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to introduce myself. I hold a master's degree in Biotechnology from TMU, Canada. During my master's degree, I completed a two-year part-time internship in a chemistry laboratory under the supervision of my professor. After graduating, I started working as a Quality Analyst at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Whitby, Canada, where I have worked for approximately four years.

I have applied for a position at Sanofi because of its phenomenal reputation and because I am seeking an opportunity to take on a more challenging role. I have strong practical and theoretical knowledge of chemistry; however, I have been struggling somewhat with physics. Therefore, I would greatly appreciate your guidance and support in strengthening my understanding of this subject.

I have completed my oriantation and now focusing on reading SOPs. I usually take my lunch break everyday around 12 pm at the cafe, therefore we can have a lunch and a first meeting there if your schdelu aligns.

looking forward to see you

yours faithfully,

Najmin manga

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the task by giving a brief outline of your studies and work experience, explaining the help you hope to receive, and suggesting arrangements for a first meeting. Your background is clearly stated, mentioning your master's degree in Biotechnology and your four years of experience as a Quality Analyst. You also successfully explain that you need help with physics and propose meeting at the café during your lunch break. However, some aspects of your response are slightly under-developed; for example, the explanation of the help you hope to receive with physics is somewhat brief and could be extended to reach a higher level. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the prompt well, while incorporating a friendly tone suitable for a letter to a colleague.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. You make effective use of paragraphing, with each paragraph dedicated to a distinct topic: your background, your purpose and expectations from the mentor, and your meeting arrangements. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect your ideas, such as using 'During my master's degree', 'After graduating', and 'Therefore'. Referencing is generally clear, helping the reader follow your thoughts easily. To move closer to the highest bands, you could experiment with a wider variety of more sophisticated cohesive links, but your current arrangement provides a very coherent overall structure that guides the reader smoothly from introduction to conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using topic-specific terms such as 'Biotechnology', 'Quality Analyst', and 'theoretical knowledge'. You make some successful attempts at less common vocabulary, but there are a few spelling and word-choice errors that slightly affect precision. For instance, 'oriantation' contains a spelling error, and 'schdelu' contains a typo. Additionally, phrases like 'if your schdelu aligns' could be phrased more naturally. These minor slips do not impede communication, but eliminating them and incorporating a slightly wider range of more sophisticated lexical items would elevate your vocabulary score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to handle different structures. You successfully use subordinate clauses, such as in 'where I have worked for approximately four years' and 'if your schdelu aligns'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text, such as missing capitalization in 'looking forward to see you' and a missing preposition or incorrect infinitive form in that same phrase ('to seeing you'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To achieve a higher score, you should aim for greater control over punctuation and ensure all complex structures are completely error-free.
