Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Smith,

I would like to introduce myself to you as you have been assigned as my mentor. I have recently joined the Dynasty Group and have heard a lot of positive coments about your leadership. I am so excited to work under your guidance.

A brief introduction about myself, I have achieved a bachedlor's degree in marketing and later worked in an Automobile Industry for 3 years. This role has taught me about customer relations, providing transperancy while closing deals and so on.

I would appreciate your assistance on some things. Firstly, I would like you to help me to improve my communication skills and satisfy needs of high-profile clients. Secondly, I would also appreciate it if you can provide me some information about workculture and ways to adopt it quicky. This will not only help me in providing satisfatory service to customers but also help to the company's reputation overall.

Moreover, I was hoping if we can arrange an in-person meeting to introduce ourselfves to each other personally. Please inform me with your available schedule.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt in a natural semi-formal letter format. You clearly introduce yourself, provide a brief outline of your previous studies in marketing and your three years of experience in the automobile industry, explain the specific help you hope to receive regarding communication and work culture, and suggest arranging an in-person meeting. All bullet points are covered and supported with relevant details, though the ideas in the third paragraph could be slightly extended further to reach a higher level of thorough development. The tone is appropriate throughout and establishes a clear purpose for writing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from your initial introduction to your background, specific requests, and finally the call to action regarding a meeting. You make effective use of cohesive devices to guide the reader through your points, such as 'Firstly,' and 'Secondly,' to organise your expectations from the mentor, and 'Moreover,' to introduce the meeting proposal. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating distinct topics into clear blocks. Referencing throughout the text is generally clear, though paragraph transitions could be smoother with more varied transitional phrases rather than standard listing devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'leadership', 'customer relations', and 'high-profile clients'. However, there are a few spelling errors and awkward word choices that prevent a higher rating, such as 'coments' instead of 'comments', 'bachedlor's' instead of 'bachelor's', 'Automobile Industry' with unnecessary capitalisation, and 'transperancy' instead of 'transparency'. Additionally, phrases like 'ways to adopt it quicky' contain spelling mistakes ('quicky') and minor collocation issues ('adapt to it quickly' would be more natural). Your vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but requires greater precision and accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using structures such as 'I would like to introduce myself to you as you have been assigned as my mentor' and 'This will not only help me in providing... but also help to...'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as 'A brief introduction about myself, I have achieved...' which is a dangling modifier, 'satisfy needs' lacking a necessary article ('satisfy the needs'), and 'Please inform me with your available schedule' where 'with' should be 'of'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and your errors rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily understand your message.
