Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I would like to write this letter to seek help and support from you because I am newly hired and wnat to learn more.

I have completed my graduation in cooking programm from Lambton college. I have 2 years of experience working as a main chef In Maharaja hotel. Along with this, I am also pursuing bakery classes.

I am expecting that you will provide the knowledge of each and everything, which includes following the proper procedures and charts, dressing of different dishes and quantity.

For the arrangements of our first meetup, I am hoping something really helpful such as providing the orientation, giving 3-4 hours of training after every discussion. In addition to this, it would be really helpful if you can mention some websites from where its better to learn or can get some idea how to do work.

I am looking forward to a positive and prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Parneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you describe your culinary studies and two years as a chef, explain that you want guidance on procedures and food presentation, and propose training and learning resources. These details make the letter relevant and give the mentor a clear sense of your background. However, the request for help is broad—“the knowledge of each and everything”—and the meeting arrangements are not yet specific: you do not suggest a date, time, place, or ask when the mentor is available. The proposed three to four hours of training after every discussion is also a substantial request without explanation. Developing these points more selectively and making a practical first-meeting proposal would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, a paragraph about your background, one about the support you want, and a closing. Linking expressions such as “Along with this” and “In addition to this” help show how ideas relate, and the reader can follow the main message. To make the progression more natural, connect the meeting proposal directly to a specific first meeting rather than moving from “our first meetup” to several ongoing training requests and websites. Some transitions are formulaic, and the long sentence beginning “In addition to this” contains several requests that would be clearer as separate sentences. More precise referencing and a focused sequence would strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, with relevant terms such as “work experience,” “procedures,” “orientation,” and “training.” However, the range is limited and several choices are unnatural or imprecise for a professional letter. “The knowledge of each and everything” is overly broad, while “dressing of different dishes” does not clearly express the culinary skill you mean; “plating” or “presentation” would be more suitable. “First meetup” is informal in this context, and “positive and prompt response” sounds less natural than a direct request to hear about the mentor’s availability. Check spelling and word forms as well, including “wnat” and “programm.” More precise workplace vocabulary would improve clarity and tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the conditional request “it would be really helpful if you can mention…” and the relative clause “from where its better to learn.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. For example, “I have completed my graduation in cooking programm” needs a more natural structure, such as “I graduated from a culinary programme,” and “if you can mention” would be more consistent as “if you could recommend.” The sentence about training after every discussion is also difficult to follow because several actions are joined together. Review articles, clause structure, and punctuation, and aim for a few clear, accurate complex sentences.
