Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am writing to introduce my self to you as your mentee at Co-oprators Insurance. I have recently joined the company as a Trainee Insurance Advisor. I was been informed that you are going to be my mentor while working in the organisation and I am looking forward to achive great success in the company while working under your guidance.

I have completed my graduation in Human Resource Management from University of Toronto back in 2024. Also, In my previous job I have worked as Analyst at the Bank of Montreal for 2.5 years. While I was studying I have worked as a call centre agent for 1.8 years for a private collection firm in Toronto. And then finally in the last month I started a new jounney with Co-operators for which I feel previledged to be the part of the great company.

Furthermore, In my previous jobs I have improved several skills skills which are required i n a customer facing role like negotiation skills, dealing with difficult customer, convincing skills, explaining complex information in easy words and so on. But, In this job I would like to learn all the processes involved in the insurance firm, also I would to get well versed with all the softwares and internal systems we used to store and access customer information. Lastly, as I am new in this role I would like to shadow an experienced Insurance agent so that I can learn how he is dealing and handling the customer.

Moreover, I lhave recieved my work schedule and I am working from office on the upcoming Monday which is 12th July. So, if you are working from office that day I would like to meet you in person and we can have an inperson meeting and there we can have a discussion again on this topic.

I hope to hear back soon from you.

Yours faithfully,

Sankalp Diwate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points: you outline your education and employment history, explain that you want to learn insurance processes and systems and observe an experienced adviser, and propose meeting on Monday, 12 July. These details make the letter relevant and give your mentor a clear sense of your background and aims. The request for help is particularly specific, although the hoped-for guidance could be developed further by explaining what you would like to discuss or practise during mentoring. The meeting suggestion is clear, but offering a time or an alternative date would make the arrangement more complete. Overall, the task is fully addressed, with ideas extended and supported, though a few could be more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: introduction, previous studies and work, mentoring goals, and a proposed meeting. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “Moreover” help signal shifts between topics. The reader can follow the message throughout. However, some transitions feel repetitive or overly formal for a friendly introduction, and the final paragraph repeats the idea of meeting (“meet you in person” and “inperson meeting”). The phrase “we can have a discussion again on this topic” is also unclear because no earlier discussion has taken place. Use simpler transitions and make references more precise to keep cohesion flexible and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the purpose, including relevant workplace terms such as “Trainee Insurance Advisor,” “customer-facing role,” “internal systems,” and “shadow an experienced Insurance agent.” These help communicate your professional background and learning goals. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, but some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “achive great success,” “learn all the processes involved in the insurance firm,” and “a new jounney.” Spelling errors such as “previledged,” “recieved,” and “softwares” also reduce accuracy. Choose natural collocations—for example, “learn the company’s procedures” and “gain experience”—and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “while I was studying” and “so that I can learn how he is dealing and handling the customer.” The overall meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I was been informed” should be “I was informed,” and “I would to get” needs “I would like to get.” Tense and article choices also need attention in “I have worked as Analyst” and “from University of Toronto”; more natural forms are “worked as an analyst” and “from the University of Toronto.” Some sentences are long and joined with several clauses, so separating ideas and checking verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries would improve control.
