Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to share my details with you as you have been assigned as my mentor. I request you to kindly schedule our first meeting so that I can start my journey here.
I have completed Masters in English 3 years back and I have worked as an IELTS trainer for 3 years. I have joined this organisation as a soft skills trainer.
I hope you would support and guide me regarding class conduct and others important rules and policies. Although I already have an experience of conducting class, I have never taken a class of 60 students altogether so I want you to share some strategies to handle class. Moreover, I want to know about attendance marking policies as well.
Tomorrow, I will be available in the second half from 1 PM to 5 PM so I think we can conduct the meeting at that time. Kindly share your workstation details so that I can meet you for your guidance.
Regards,
Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requested points: you outline your Master’s degree and three years as an IELTS trainer, explain that you want guidance on class management and workplace policies, and propose a meeting time. The specific challenge of teaching 60 students makes your request for strategies relevant and personal. The purpose and tone are clear throughout. To develop the content further, explain briefly what you hope to learn about soft-skills training or how your mentor’s advice could support your career, rather than relying mainly on a list of questions. Also, “Dear Sir or Madam” is impersonal for a letter to a named mentor; use their name if available, or a warmer greeting such as “Dear [Name]”.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: introduction, background, requests for support, and meeting arrangements. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Although” and “Moreover” show how your ideas relate. The meeting proposal is easy to locate and understand. Some connections could be more natural and precise: “I request you to kindly schedule our first meeting” is followed by a specific time proposal later, so you could state the proposed time directly in the opening or keep all arrangements together. The sequence of requests in the third paragraph also feels somewhat list-like. Grouping the class-management and policy questions more smoothly would make the progression feel more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose, and phrases such as “career,” “strategies,” and “attendance marking policies” communicate relevant workplace concerns. You also use some task-specific language, including “soft skills trainer” and “conducting class.” However, several expressions are awkward or imprecise, which limits the naturalness and flexibility of your word choice. For example, “share my details with you” is vague in this context, and “conduct a meeting” is less idiomatic than “have” or “arrange a meeting.” “Others important rules” also has an incorrect word form and sounds unnatural. Aim for precise, conventional workplace collocations while retaining the clear, professional tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are clear and controlled, such as “I have joined this organisation as a soft skills trainer.” The contrast introduced by “Although” and the reason expressed with “so” show some range. A few grammatical errors remain. In “I have completed Masters in English 3 years back,” the article and tense construction need attention; a natural version is “I completed a master’s degree in English three years ago.” In “I have never taken a class of 60 students altogether,” the phrasing and article pattern are not fully controlled. Check articles, plural forms, and time expressions, and use punctuation to separate longer requests clearly.
