Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Smith,

I am writing to introduce myself as I have recently joined the company and have been informed that you will be my mentor. I am delighted to have this opportunity and look forward to learning from your experience.

Regrading my background, I completed a degree in physiotherapy and have more than ten years of work experience in the healthcare sector. Before joining this organisation, I worked in private clinic and care home, where I gained valuable experience in treating patients and working with different healthcare professionals.

As i am new to the organisation, I would appreciate your guidance on your understanding the company's policies, improving my professional skills and adapting to the workplace environment In addition, I hope you can give some valuable experience in career development and help me identify areas where I can improve.

I would be grateful if we could arrange an initial meeting next week to discuss these matters. I am available on Friday and Sunday evening, although I would happy to adjust my schedule to suit your convenience. Please let me know which time would ne most suitable for you.

Thank you for offering your time and support. I look forward to me meeting you and working together.

Yours faithfully,

Darshit

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three requirements clearly: you outline your physiotherapy degree and healthcare experience, explain the support you want, and propose a first meeting. The details about working in a private clinic and care home make your background relevant, while your request for help with company policies and career development gives the mentor a clear sense of your needs. The meeting proposal is practical, with specific days and a willingness to be flexible. To make the letter more fully developed, explain briefly what you hope to discuss first or identify a particular professional goal. Overall, the purpose and tone are clear and appropriate for writing to a workplace mentor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter follows a clear progression from introduction, to background, to the support you seek, and finally to meeting arrangements and a courteous closing. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these stages, and transitions such as “Before joining this organisation” and “In addition” make the sequence easy to follow. The organisation is effective, though the support paragraph contains several requests in one long sentence, which makes the ideas less easy to process. Separate the requests or use clearer punctuation to give each point more emphasis. The closing also repeats the idea of meeting and working together; a more concise final sentence would make the ending smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a suitable range of workplace and professional vocabulary, including “career development,” “professional skills,” “workplace environment,” and “valuable experience.” These choices communicate your aims clearly and show some awareness of formal letter style. A few word-choice, spelling, and collocation slips reduce precision: “Regrading” should be “Regarding,” “give some valuable experience” is not a natural way to describe the mentor’s support, and “working in private clinic” needs a more natural phrase such as “working in a private clinic.” Aim for precise, idiomatic combinations rather than relying on broad phrases such as “valuable experience.” This would strengthen the otherwise appropriate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the relative clause in “where I gained valuable experience” and the conditional phrasing “I would be grateful if we could arrange.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some errors in grammar and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “As i am new…” needs a capital “I,” and the sentence beginning there runs into “In addition” without a full stop or other clear boundary. In “I would happy to adjust,” the verb “be” is missing; “which time would ne most suitable” also contains a typing error that obscures the intended form. Proofread sentence boundaries and check verb patterns to improve accuracy.
