give a brief outline of your previous studies and work experience
explain what help you hope your mentor can give
suggest arrangements for a first meeting with your mentor
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear....... ,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Maclean,
I hope you are doing well!
My name is Anamika. I recently joined Cobequid Foundation as a Bookkeeper and Donor Services Coordinator. I did a Master of Commerce, and I worked as an assistant accountant back in India for five years. In Canada, I am volunteering with the Maritime Sikh Society as an Accountant.
It is my first accounting job in Canada, and you are my mentor now. I would need your guidance while posting adjusting journal entries and preparing financial statements. My manager told me that the format for preparing the Balance Sheet and Income Statement is quite different in the Foundation.
It would be great if we could meet in person if you have time. We can either meet on weekdays during lunchtime or after work, whether on weekdays or weekends. I usually take my lunch around 12:00 pm; if it is convenient for you, we can meet around 12:30 pm.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Anamika

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You outline relevant qualifications and experience, including a Master of Commerce, five years as an assistant accountant in India, and current volunteering in Canada. You also identify specific support you need with adjusting journal entries and financial statements, and propose a practical lunchtime meeting. These details make the request clear and relevant. To develop the ideas further, briefly explain what you hope to learn from your mentor beyond the immediate tasks, such as understanding the Foundation’s accounting procedures or settling into the Canadian workplace. The meeting proposal could also be more decisive by suggesting a particular day or asking which of two options suits Maclean.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear progression: introduction and background, the guidance you need, meeting arrangements, and a courteous closing. Separate paragraphs help the reader identify each purpose, while links such as “It is my first accounting job in Canada” connect your experience to your request for support. The letter is easy to follow throughout. Some phrasing in the meeting paragraph is less streamlined: “on weekdays during lunchtime or after work, whether on weekdays or weekends” repeats the weekday option and makes the choices slightly unclear. You could organise this more efficiently by offering two distinct possibilities, such as a weekday lunch or a weekend meeting, then asking which is convenient.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a suitable range of workplace and accounting vocabulary, including “assistant accountant,” “adjusting journal entries,” “financial statements,” and “Balance Sheet and Income Statement.” These terms make your needs specific, and the tone is appropriately polite. There is some awareness of professional style, particularly in “guidance” and “convenient.” A few expressions could be more natural or precise: “I did a Master of Commerce” is less idiomatic than “I completed a Master of Commerce,” and “the format … is quite different in the Foundation” could specify that you mean the organisation’s reporting format or procedures. Refining these collocations and avoiding repeated wording in the meeting paragraph would make your vocabulary more flexible and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter includes a useful mix of sentence forms, and many sentences are accurate, such as “I recently joined Cobequid Foundation as a Bookkeeper and Donor Services Coordinator” and “My manager told me that the format … is quite different.” You also use subordinate clauses effectively in “if it is convenient for you, we can meet around 12:30 pm.” Overall, the meaning remains clear. A few grammatical choices need attention: “I did a Master of Commerce” uses an unsuitable verb for describing a qualification; write “I completed a Master of Commerce.” In “I would need your guidance,” “I would appreciate your guidance” is a more appropriate construction for a polite request. Check spacing and capitalisation consistency as well, including the extra space in “Balance Sheet.”
