Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. Ali,
I hope this message finds you will. I am a new employee at IT department and my manger sent me your email address and he told me you will be my mentor during the first three months at the company.
First of all, I am a computer engineer with 3 years of experience. I have graduated from Univesity of Technology at 2020.
Although I have good skills in programming, I don't have any experience in web development.
I am also a part time student, so I need a flexible schedule for mentorship period.
Also, I really need to understand how you built the computer networking system at the company.
By providing me with network diagram, I will be able to visualize the network topolgy.
Honestly, I know it is a massive network and it requires many day to understand it.
Finally, if you could be avilable tomorrow, I would be ready to start my learning journey with you. Please let me know if there is anything I need to study before we start.
Best wishes,
Ahmed

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points and maintain an appropriate, polite tone. Your background is clear in “a computer engineer with 3 years of experience,” and you explain that you want to learn about the company’s network and would value a network diagram. The request for a flexible mentoring schedule also gives your mentor useful context. The meeting proposal is present, but “if you could be available tomorrow” is quite abrupt and offers no time or alternative, so the arrangements are less fully developed than the other points. To strengthen the letter further, briefly specify the kind of guidance you want in web development and suggest a time or ask when would suit your mentor. The relevant content is clear, though some ideas could be extended.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall sequence: introduction, background, learning needs, and a proposed meeting. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and signposts such as “First of all,” “Also,” and “Finally” make the progression easy to follow. However, the repeated sequencing words make the connections somewhat mechanical, and “Also” introduces a new request without showing how it relates to your earlier explanation of your skills. The sentence about being a part-time student and needing a flexible schedule could be linked more directly to the meeting proposal. Use a wider range of natural links and make references between ideas more explicit; this would make the organisation feel smoother rather than simply a series of points.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the purpose, including relevant technical terms such as “programming,” “web development,” “network diagram,” and “network topology.” Phrases such as “learning journey” also show an attempt to vary expression. Some spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural choices remain, including “manger,” “Univesity,” “topolgy,” and “avilable.” “Understand how you built” is understandable but less precise than wording that asks about the design or structure of the network. These slips do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but careful proofreading and more natural collocations would improve control. Aim to use technical vocabulary accurately while keeping the tone suitably professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional request “if you could be available tomorrow” and the clause beginning “Although I have good skills in programming.” Most of the message remains easy to understand. Some grammatical errors are present, however: “finds you will” should be “finds you well,” and “I have graduated … at 2020” needs a more suitable tense and preposition, such as “I graduated … in 2020.” The opening also needs an article in “at the IT department,” and “it requires many day” should be “it requires many days.” Review articles, tense and time prepositions, and singular/plural agreement. More consistently accurate sentences would strengthen the letter while preserving its range.
