Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sam,

I hope you are doing well. I'm writing this to let you know about me as I heard alot about your support and help you provide at your workplace.

I completed dentistry from Pakistan and went to abroad for Master's degree. I finished one and a half year training along with few internships at different dental clinics.

I have a great deal of experience in diagnosing and evaluating surgical impaction cases. I always admire working in surgery department.

Now, I want to explore some other fields as well like paedodontics department. I need your supervision in that respective department regarding dealing with children . I find working there quite challenging and exhausting. I really want to be good and confident in that section also.

Next week hospital is arranging a workshop for students so we will be free early. I want you to meet me at a cafe next to the hospital. I heard about their Iced latte it's so good and refreshing. I genuinely want you to be there so, we can discuss everything in person.

All the best,

Hira

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points in the task: you outline your dentistry studies and clinical experience, explain that you want support in paedodontics, and propose meeting at a café next week. The purpose and friendly relationship with your mentor are clear. The background is supported with relevant details, including your training and experience with surgical impaction cases. The request for help is also specific, but the meeting arrangement is less fully developed: you do not suggest a particular day or time, and “we will be free early” leaves the timing unclear. To make the letter more complete, specify when you could meet and briefly clarify what guidance you hope to receive as you develop in the new department.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: introduction, professional background, request for mentoring, and a proposed meeting. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “Now” and “Next week” signal transitions. The sequence is logical, though some linking is a little mechanical, and the final paragraph moves from the workshop to the café and then to the drink without clearly stating a meeting time. The reference in “that respective department” is also not entirely smooth. For stronger cohesion, connect the meeting proposal directly to a specific time and purpose, and use transitions that show how your experience leads to your development goals.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a professional introduction, including relevant terms such as “internships,” “diagnosing,” “surgical impaction cases,” and “supervision.” These details make your background and goals understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, although some choices are unnatural or imprecise: “went to abroad” and “in that respective department” do not sound idiomatic, while “I heard alot” is informal and contains a spelling error. “Exhausting” may also sound overly negative when describing the area in which you hope to develop. Aim for natural professional collocations and a consistently appropriate tone, while retaining the useful specialist vocabulary you already use.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the message remains easy to understand. For example, “I completed dentistry from Pakistan and went to abroad for Master's degree” combines related information, while “I find working there quite challenging and exhausting” expresses your view clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, including missing or incorrect articles in “for Master's degree” and “at a cafe,” and the awkward construction “went to abroad.” The sentence “Next week hospital is arranging a workshop” also needs an article before “hospital.” Review article use and sentence patterns, and punctuate the invitation more cleanly; these improvements would make your otherwise clear message more accurate.
