Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mentor,

I hope you are doing well. My name is Amandeep Kaur. I have recently joined the company. I am writing to introduce myself and express my pleasure at having you as my mentor.

Regarding my background, I have completed my bachelor's in computer science and engineering. I also have experience as a full-stack developer for one year in an IT company in Delhi. I worked there as an intern for one year. I gained knowledge of handling projects with clients and working as a team. I am excited to use these skills in my new role and learn from experienced employees.

As a new employee, I would appreciate your guidance in understanding the company's working culture and improving my professional skills. I would also like to know how to handle challenging situations and develop my career in the right direction.

I would be happy to arrange our first meeting next week if you are available. We could meet in an office cafeteria on Tuesday. However, I am flexible and can adjust according to your schedule.

Thank you for your time and support. I am looking forward to meeting you and learning from your experience.

Best regards.

Amandeep kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a suitable, friendly purpose: you introduce yourself, outline your education and experience, explain the support you want, and propose a first meeting. The details about your computer science degree and year as a full-stack developer give the mentor a useful starting picture. Your requests for help with workplace culture, challenging situations, and career development are relevant, though they remain somewhat general; one specific skill or goal would make them more fully developed. The meeting suggestion is clear, with Tuesday and flexibility offered. To strengthen the letter further, specify a time or ask which day suits the mentor, and use a more personal salutation if you know their name.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information follows a clear, logical progression: introduction, background, mentoring needs, and meeting arrangements. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and transitions such as “Regarding my background” and “As a new employee” help signal each stage. The closing also reinforces your positive attitude toward the relationship. Cohesion is generally effective, although some links are a little formulaic, and the final “Thank you” and “I am looking forward” sentences repeat the same courteous closing function. You could make the progression feel more natural by linking your experience directly to the guidance you seek, then ending with one concise closing sentence. Overall, the reader can follow the purpose and details without difficulty.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is adequate and appropriate for a professional introductory letter, with useful phrases such as “full-stack developer,” “working culture,” and “challenging situations.” You also communicate your aims clearly through expressions like “develop my career in the right direction.” The range is sufficient, but several phrases are broad or slightly unnatural, which limits precision and flexibility. For example, “handling projects with clients” is less idiomatic than describing client-facing project work, and “company's working culture” could be expressed more naturally as “workplace culture.” “Experienced employees” is understandable but could be more specific to the mentoring relationship. More precise collocations and varied wording would make the letter sound more fluent and professionally polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and many sentences are accurate, including “I would appreciate your guidance in understanding the company's working culture” and “I am flexible and can adjust according to your schedule.” Past and present tenses are generally controlled when describing your education, previous work, and current aims. The sentence “I also have experience as a full-stack developer for one year in an IT company in Delhi. I worked there as an intern for one year” is grammatically understandable, but the repeated time information makes the relationship between the role and internship less clear. Combining these ideas into one sentence would improve control and concision. Check punctuation and capitalization in the sign-off: “Best regards,” should lead into your name, which should be capitalized as “Amandeep Kaur.”
