Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Ali,
I am writin.g to inform you that you have been assigned as a new mentor to me. I am eargerly looking forward to work with you. I have studied from AB college, Lahore. I have been working as a dentist for two years now. I enjoy working as a dentist and doing the relevant procedures on my patients. Despite of the long working hours. I feel accomplished at the end of the day when I see my patients satisfied. Furthermore, I am going to join my residency in orthodontics under your supervision and would really appreciate your guidance in my journey. I have really struggled in performing orthodontic procedures duering my housejob and found them complicated. I am looking forward to work on it and improve my skills. I am hoping we can setup a meeting for upcoming Sunday to discuss the plan of improvement. Respectfully, if your schedule allows it I would love to take you out for dinner and share thoughts on the upcoming residency ideas.
Looking forward to work with under your expertise.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requirements and maintain a suitable, respectful tone for writing to a mentor. You outline your education at AB College and two years of dental work, explain that you want guidance with orthodontic procedures and your residency, and propose meeting on Sunday. The specific difficulty you experienced during your house job makes your request relevant. This meets the task well, with some elements more fully addressed than others: your studies are mentioned only briefly, and the help you hope to receive could be made more specific, such as asking for feedback on particular skills or career decisions. The dinner invitation is friendly, but could be framed as an optional suggestion to keep the professional purpose of the meeting clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter follows a generally sensible sequence: introduction, background, request for support, and a proposed meeting. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “Despite” help connect ideas, and the closing signals that you are keen to work with your mentor. However, the response is presented as one long paragraph, so the different purposes are not clearly separated. Some transitions also feel mechanical, and the final sentence, “Looking forward to work with under your expertise,” is unclear and does not connect smoothly to the preceding invitation. Use short paragraphs for your background, mentoring needs, and meeting arrangements, and make the closing sentence complete and precise to create clearer progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the situation, including relevant professional terms such as “dentist,” “orthodontics,” “procedures,” and “residency.” Phrases such as “guidance in my journey” communicate your enthusiasm, though some choices are less natural or precise: “assigned as a new mentor to me” and “work on it” are vague, while “share thoughts on the upcoming residency ideas” is awkward. There are also spelling slips, including “eagerly” and “during,” and the unusual punctuation in “writin.g.” These do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading and more natural collocations would improve control. For example, specify the orthodontic skills you want to develop rather than referring generally to “it.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “Despite of the long working hours” and the conditional phrase “if your schedule allows it.” Most of your meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. “Despite of” should be “Despite,” and “Despite the long working hours” is currently a sentence fragment because it is separated from the following clause by a full stop. The closing “Looking forward to work with under your expertise” is also structurally incomplete; write, for example, “I look forward to working under your guidance.” Check verb patterns after “look forward to,” and ensure each sentence has a complete main clause. These corrections would make your varied sentence forms more accurate.
