Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am Saloni Kapadia, your new mentee and junior who recently joined this institute as an assistant professor. I was being informed by the respected Director Dr. Pinakin Jaiswal regarding your appointment as my mentor for a month to help me get familiar with the workplace. Considering that I would like share a few details about my past experiences and academic performances.
I pursued my bachelors and master's in business administration from GLS university in Ahmedabad. After my graduation, I started my career as a lecturer in an institute affiliated to state university where I was responsible for teaching across Marketing subjects. Apart from this, I was handling the role of exam coordinator too. Overall, I am associated with education industry for almost 5 years.
Consequently, I expect my previous experience will be helpful to this organization and my upcoming work. As a newcomer, I expect to learn a lot more new things from you especially about web portals. It would be great if we meet this saturday and discuss regarding classes and schedules as well as a few things which plays a vital role as a new employee. I hope you will consider my suggestion for the meeting. Looking forward to hear from you!
Yours faithfully,
Saloni.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you outline your MBA studies and five years in education, explain that you hope to learn about workplace web portals and other procedures, and propose meeting on Saturday to discuss classes and schedules. The purpose is clear and the details are relevant. The background and proposed meeting are reasonably specific, while the help you want is less fully explained: “a few things which plays a vital role” does not identify those things, and the request for support could be more precise. The next step is to develop this part with one or two concrete examples of guidance you need, such as using particular systems or understanding teaching expectations. The letter is appropriately addressed to a mentor and maintains a generally suitable tone.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: introduction, education and work history, then expectations and a meeting proposal. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “After my graduation” and “As a newcomer” help signal the relationship between ideas. Some connections are less natural or precise, however. “Consequently” does not clearly link your previous experience to your expectations, and “Considering that” introduces the background details awkwardly. The final paragraph also combines your expected contribution, learning goals, meeting request and closing in a dense sequence. To strengthen progression, use more direct transitions and separate the meeting arrangements from the explanation of the support you hope to receive. The reader can follow the message, though cohesion is not consistently smooth.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range for a professional introduction, including “assistant professor,” “exam coordinator,” “affiliated,” and “career.” These choices communicate your background and goals clearly, and the tone is mostly appropriate. Some phrases are imprecise or unnatural in this context, such as “academic performances,” “learn a lot more new things,” and “discuss regarding classes.” “Web portals” is a useful specific example, but the broader request for guidance remains vague. Aim for more natural professional collocations and precise wording rather than adding complexity for its own sake. For example, describe your “academic background,” say you hope to “gain further knowledge,” and ask to “discuss classes and schedules.” These refinements would make the vocabulary more flexible and idiomatic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and the message remains understandable throughout. However, some grammatical errors recur. “I would like share” needs an infinitive marker (“would like to share”), while “I was being informed” is an awkward passive construction for a completed event; “I was informed” is appropriate. There are also agreement and article issues in “a few things which plays” and “associated with education industry,” as well as the incorrect pattern “Looking forward to hear” instead of “hearing.” These errors rarely prevent communication, but they reduce accuracy. Review verb patterns after expressions such as “would like” and “look forward to,” and check subject–verb agreement and articles when editing.
