Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mentor,
I am writing you to introduce myself, Yasha Baid, a recently hired employee in the company. I have been provided with all of your details, so I thought to get some support from you.
I am graduated from Tribhuvan University, Nepal, in 2016 A.D., with a distinction score of 86%. In addition to that, I have a post graduate degree in Manufacturing Management from Lambton College, Canada in 2023 A.D. Regarding my work experience, I have an experience of 4 years working in Chemical Laboratory as a Junior Lab Assistant in Nepal, and 3 years of canadian experience in research field.
As I am a new employee, I do not know much about the company's policies and regulations. Moreover, I am facing a problem, while logging in to the official portal and finishing my online training. I tried several times, but could not figure it out. Could you please assist me with signing in the portal and get an access to my training?
I would be grateful if we could meet and discuss about the issues. Could you please let me know if you are available in the evening 5 p.m., so that we can meet at a cafe, which is located just nearby to our office. Looking forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Yasha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requirements clearly. Your education and employment history are specific, including your degrees, institutions, and laboratory and research experience. You also explain the support you need, particularly help with company policies and accessing the training portal, and you propose an evening meeting at a nearby café. These details make the letter relevant and give the mentor a clear sense of your needs. To strengthen the response further, develop the kind of longer-term career guidance you hope to receive, rather than focusing mainly on immediate practical problems. The meeting suggestion could also be more precise by offering a particular day or inviting the mentor to suggest a convenient time. Overall, the purpose and requested information are clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: you introduce yourself, describe your background, explain the help you need, and suggest a meeting. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking phrases such as “In addition to that,” “Regarding my work experience,” and “Moreover” help connect related points. The reader can follow your message without difficulty. Some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the opening moves quickly from your introduction to asking for support. You could make the flow more natural by briefly explaining your career goals before describing the portal issue, and by using a smoother transition into the meeting request. The closing is appropriate, though the final request and sign-off could be separated into a distinct closing paragraph.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including relevant workplace terms such as “mentor,” “company’s policies and regulations,” “online training,” and “research field.” Your educational and employment details are communicated clearly, and the reader can understand the support you are requesting. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “I am graduated,” “distinction score,” “get an access,” and “discuss about the issues.” “Canadian” should also be capitalised. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit the naturalness and precision of the language. Aim to learn common word partnerships and use more precise phrasing when describing your experience and the guidance you hope to receive.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a café, which is located just nearby to our office” and a conditional request beginning “Could you please let me know if…”. Most ideas remain understandable, and you show some control of longer sentences. However, some grammatical errors persist: “I am graduated” needs a different verb form, and “I have an experience of 4 years” has an article and construction problem. In “available in the evening 5 p.m.,” the time phrase is not grammatically integrated, while “assist me with signing in the portal and get an access” has inconsistent parallel structure. More accurate verb forms, articles, and sentence patterns would help you demonstrate the wider control needed for a stronger performance.
