Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this email finds you well.

I am writing to give you brief details about myself, I am Travis graduated in B.com from GNDU University, Jalandhar in [redacted phone]. After completion of my studies I worked two years as a computer instructor in a large computer training centre located near to my home. Although I have acquired skills of drafting emails and professional documents, designing posters, logos and promotional materials, I still need your guidance and support to complete my tasks efficiently here in this organisation. As I am new here joined two days ago, I am not familiar with working culture, target achievement strategies, rules and regulations of this workplace. To know more about this company and working environment, I would really appreciate if you could personally meet me where we can discuss these matter. If possible I would love to meet in a restaurant outside the office area, I will make booking in advance after getting your approval on the same. Kindly do let me know if anything from my side is also required before meeting you.

Thank you in advance for your kind co-operation and support. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Travis

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points: you outline your B.Com studies and two years as a computer instructor, explain that you want guidance with workplace practices and completing tasks, and propose meeting in person. These details make the letter relevant and give the mentor a clear sense of your background and needs. The request for help is reasonably specific, although the meeting proposal could be more fully developed by suggesting a day or time and offering an alternative if a restaurant is inconvenient. The greeting “Dear Sir or Madam” is also rather impersonal for a letter to a named mentor; using their name would make the introduction more directly tailored to the situation. Overall, the main ideas are clear and supported, with some scope to make the arrangements more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a sensible sequence: you introduce yourself, describe your studies and work, explain the support you need, and move on to arranging a meeting. Linking expressions such as “After completion of my studies,” “Although,” and “To know more” help show the relationships between ideas. However, most of the letter is presented as one long paragraph, so the shift from background to your request and then to meeting arrangements is not visually clear. Some links also feel mechanical, and the sentence beginning “I am writing to give you brief details about myself” runs directly into your personal details. Use two or three purposeful paragraphs and clearer transitions to make the progression easier to follow and more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of workplace vocabulary, including “professional documents,” “promotional materials,” “working culture,” and “target achievement strategies.” These phrases help explain both your experience and the areas where you want support. There are, however, several awkward or imprecise collocations that limit naturalness: “located near to my home,” “complete my tasks efficiently here,” and “approval on the same” sound less idiomatic in this context. “Kind co-operation” is understandable but overly formal for a friendly introduction to a mentor. Aim for more natural professional phrasing, such as “near my home,” “carry out my duties effectively,” and “confirm the arrangements.” This would make your vocabulary more fluent and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the contrast introduced by “Although” and the conditional phrase “If possible.” The meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence construction, verb forms, articles, and agreement. For example, “I am writing to give you brief details about myself, I am Travis graduated” joins clauses incorrectly and needs restructuring; “As I am new here joined two days ago” is missing a suitable verb construction; and “discuss these matter” has a number-agreement error. The sentence about meeting “where we can discuss” also has an unclear reference. Break up long sentences, check that each clause has a complete verb, and review articles and singular/plural forms. Greater accuracy across these patterns would strengthen the letter.
