Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Peter,
I am writing this letter to introduce myself as I will be your mentee. I have recetly joined this company as a Junior Civil engineer.
I have recently completed my Master of Civil engineering from University of Waterloo. Before that I was working for Jacob Ltd. at Windor location.
As you know, I was recently hired, so I am not fimiliar with all other departments and how we coordinates with them. I would much appreciated if you can help me with that. Apart from that, Could you also please send me contact info of our HR as I will need them for my pay and benefits.
I hope we can meet at sometimes maybe at our monthly meeting which is going to be held on 23rd of October. If you were going to attend that by web then we can arrange it for any other time whenever you are going to come into the office.
I am looking forward to meeting you in-person and thank you for being my mentor.
Best regard,
Jenish Bhimani

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three requested points: you outline your master’s degree and previous employment, explain that you need help understanding how departments coordinate, and suggest meeting at the October monthly meeting or arranging another time. The purpose and relationship are clear, and the requests are relevant. However, some details are less fully developed than others. Your work experience is only identified as a role at Jacob Ltd., without saying what you did or for how long, and the help you seek is quite narrow. The request for HR contact details is useful but could be linked more clearly to the mentor’s role. Add a little context about your experience and specify the guidance you hope to receive to make the letter more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: introduction, background, requests for support, meeting arrangements, and a polite closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “Before that” and “Apart from that” signal relationships between ideas. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and also shows some stronger control through a logical progression. At times, however, the connections are slightly mechanical, and the meeting proposal is difficult to follow: “If you were going to attend that by web” does not clearly state whether you mean attending online. Make the alternatives more direct and use clear references, for example, “If you plan to attend online, perhaps we could arrange a separate in-person meeting.”
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a professional introductory letter, including “mentee,” “departments,” “benefits,” and “arrange.” The tone is generally appropriate, and your meaning remains understandable despite some inaccurate choices and spelling slips. For example, “not fimiliar” should be “not familiar,” while “contact info” is rather informal in this context; “contact details” would be more suitable. “At sometimes” is also an awkward phrase, and “by web” is not a natural way to describe online attendance. These issues show that you can communicate the relevant ideas but do not yet control collocation and register consistently. Aim for precise, natural workplace expressions and proofread spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple sentences and more complex forms, including the conditional “If you were going to attend…” and the request “I would much appreciated if you can help me.” The message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “how we coordinates” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, and “I would much appreciated” needs the structure “I would much appreciate it if…” The conditional sentence about attending online also shifts awkwardly between forms. There are some issues with articles and sentence punctuation, such as capitalising “Could” after a comma. Practise accurate request structures, agreement, and conditional forms; these changes would make your varied sentences more controlled.
