Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Annie,
It's such a pleasure to get to know you!
I would like to introduce myself a little bit. I have worked in Axenix company, that's the consulting IT-company. In the past it was international, but not anymore.
I've been working there as an Analyst.
My background mostly is in making different industry research and visualisating it. Moreover, I tried myself in a business analyst role - prepared operational processes and suggested some improvements and optimisations.
This place is new for me, and it does not look like where I've been before. I suppose, career in a product firm is totally unknown area for me.
I expect you will be able to give me advices about daily life here, projects and about my colleages.
Especially, I'm curious about my department and the team. I still don't get who is a manager and where I'm supposed to go with my functional questions.
I'd be glad to make an appointment on tomorrow or after that day. Preferably, I suggest to talk in the office, if you are comfortable to appear here.
Otherwise, I've already put in this message the link for the online video call. Please, let me know what do you choose.
See you soon!
Best regards,
Amilie

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three requested points: you outline your analyst experience and research work, explain that you want guidance about the company, projects, colleagues, and team structure, and propose a first meeting. The purpose is clear and the details are relevant. However, the studies part of your background is not covered, despite the request for previous studies and work experience. The help you hope to receive is also somewhat broad; for example, you mention wanting advice about “daily life here” but could specify a particular goal, such as understanding project workflows or developing product-analysis skills. The meeting proposal gives a timeframe and format options, though “on tomorrow or after that day” is not precise. Covering these points more fully would make the letter more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall sequence: introduction and work background, expectations of the mentor, then arrangements for meeting. Paragraph breaks help the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Especially,” and “Otherwise” show how ideas relate. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. “This place is new for me” follows the work-history paragraph without a clear transition, and “Otherwise” does not quite express the relationship between meeting in person and using a video call. The short standalone sentence “I've been working there as an Analyst” could be joined to the preceding information for a more fluent paragraph. Use transitions that explicitly signal contrast or alternatives, and make references such as “here” and “this place” more specific.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of workplace vocabulary, including “Analyst,” “industry research,” “operational processes,” “optimisations,” and “functional questions.” These choices communicate your experience and the support you need. However, several word-choice, form, or collocation errors make the language less natural: “visualisating it,” “give me advices,” and “my colleages.” “Career in a product firm is totally unknown area” is also awkwardly expressed, and “appear here” is not the natural choice for attending a meeting. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they limit precision and control. Aim to learn common workplace collocations as complete phrases and check spelling and countable/uncountable forms before sending the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the relative clause in “the consulting IT-company, that's…” and the conditional phrase “if you are comfortable…”. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect naturalness. For example, “a career in a product firm is totally unknown area” needs an article before “totally unknown area,” while “I'd be glad to make an appointment on tomorrow” uses an incorrect preposition and time expression. The sentence beginning “I suppose, career…” also needs a clearer grammatical structure. Review articles, prepositions in time expressions, and sentence construction around introductory phrases. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control without requiring more complicated ideas.
