Dear....... ,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Madam,

I am writing to let you know about the mentorship. I am one of the newly employed staff and I have be assigned to you to be my mentor.

I was a student at University of Nigeria, Nsukka. I studied Nursing management and graduated last three years. I have worked in one of the hospitals in Enugu State where I worked as a ward manager. I delegate and assign duties according to capability of the staff.

I believe by working with you as your mentee, I would be able to improve on my delegation, nursing managerial roles, auditing and other advice and supports needed for the work.

I thought we would after work on Tuesday just for a few minutes to introduce ourselves properly, get to know more on each other and discuss the way forward. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Lynda.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you outline your nursing studies and ward-management experience, identify areas where you want support, and propose a Tuesday meeting. These details make the letter relevant and give the reader a clear sense of your background. The request for help is reasonably specific, particularly your mention of delegation and auditing, but “other advice and supports needed for the work” is broad and could be explained more clearly. The meeting suggestion also gives a day and purpose, though a time or a question about your mentor’s availability would make the arrangement more complete. The response therefore covers the task well overall, while some ideas are not yet fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph about your background, a paragraph on the support you hope to receive, and a closing meeting proposal. This sequence helps the reader follow your purpose, and phrases such as “I believe” and “Looking forward to hearing from you” connect the ideas to the relationship you are establishing. However, the transition into the meeting proposal is slightly awkward in “I thought we would after work on Tuesday,” and the final “Thanks for your consideration” feels somewhat detached from the preceding request. Use a smoother linking phrase and make the proposed arrangement a complete, direct sentence. Paragraphing is appropriate, but cohesion is not consistently natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a professional introductory letter, including relevant terms such as “ward manager,” “delegate,” “auditing,” and “mentorship.” These choices communicate your experience and the areas in which you want to develop. Some expressions, however, are imprecise or do not collocate naturally: “I have be assigned to you to be my mentor” is unclear, while “advice and supports” and “get to know more on each other” are awkward. “Nursing managerial roles” is also less natural than a more specific phrase such as “nursing management responsibilities.” Aim for conventional workplace expressions and precise wording, especially when describing the mentoring relationship and the support you seek.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple sentences and longer structures, and the main message remains clear. For example, “I studied Nursing management and graduated last three years” communicates your education, while the sentence beginning “I believe by working with you” attempts a more complex construction. Some grammatical errors remain: “I have be assigned” should use the past participle “been,” and “graduated last three years” needs a time expression such as “three years ago.” The meeting sentence, “I thought we would after work on Tuesday,” is missing a clear verb structure. There are also occasional issues with articles and prepositions. Check verb forms and sentence completeness, while retaining your attempts at varied sentence structures.
