Dear....... ,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr. Dan,
I am writing to introduce myself as your new mentee and to express my pleasure at having the opportunity to learn from your experience.
I recently graduated with a degree in commerce from University of Delhi. During my studies, I completed my internship at a local marketing firm, where I gained a practical experience in customer relationship, teamwork and project management. I have recently joined this company as junior marketing manager and I am eager to develop my professional skills further.
As I am at the beginning of my career, I would greatly appreciate your guidance on improving my communication and leadership skills. I would also like to know how to handle challenging tasks, understanding the company's culture and identifying the opportunities for career advancement. I believe your experience will help me adapt quickly and become a more effective employee.
Regarding my first meeting, would you available next Tuesday afternoon? We could meet in the company cafeteria for a brief discussion. However, I would arrange a different time if this does not suits your schedule.
Looking forward to hearing from you and learning from you.
Yours sincerely,
Mohammed Yasir

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you outline your commerce degree and marketing internship, explain the guidance you want with communication, leadership and career development, and propose a time and place for a first meeting. The opening also establishes a suitable, positive relationship with the mentor. Your requests are relevant and supported with some detail, such as wanting to learn how to handle challenging tasks and adapt to the company. To make the ideas more fully developed, specify one or two particular areas from your internship or a concrete career goal, and make the meeting proposal slightly more definite by offering an alternative time. Overall, the purpose and tone remain clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information follows a clear, logical sequence: introduction, background, mentoring needs, meeting arrangements and closing. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these stages, while phrases such as “During my studies,” “As I am at the beginning of my career” and “Regarding my first meeting” guide the progression. The letter is easy to follow and its ideas connect naturally. Some linking is a little formulaic, and the final sentence repeats “learning from you” after the opening has already mentioned learning from the mentor. You could make cohesion more subtle by varying transitions and ending with a concise, purposeful closing that does not repeat earlier wording.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a suitable range of workplace and career vocabulary, including “internship,” “customer relationship,” “project management,” “career advancement” and “adapt quickly.” These choices communicate your background and goals clearly, and the tone is appropriately professional. There are occasional collocation or word-choice inaccuracies that limit precision: “a practical experience” is less natural than “practical experience,” and “understanding the company's culture” does not fit smoothly in the list of things you want to learn. “Customer relationship” would also be more idiomatic as “customer relations” or “customer relationship management.” Continue building natural collocations for professional contexts; this will make the vocabulary more flexible and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter includes a useful mix of simple and complex structures, such as the relative clause “where I gained…” and the conditional “if this does not suits your schedule.” Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. A few errors remain in verb forms and sentence construction. In “would you available,” the verb “be” is missing; “does not suits” should be “does not suit”; and “I would arrange a different time” would be more natural as “I would be happy to arrange a different time.” There is also an article omission in “joined this company as junior marketing manager.” Proofreading these patterns will help you maintain accuracy while using varied structures.
