Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear mentor,

I Neethu Simon writing to introduce myself as am the newest addition to the team. This is my third work place, I used to work for two international companies. I joined the first company as a trainee in sales and got promoted to a permanent position within three months. Then after six months I got promoted as a team lead. I learned a lot about marketing, sales and finance when I was serving there. I have a strong foundation in marketing and finance as it was my major for Post graduation.

I am more like a self learner, and never had an opportunity to get groomed by a mentor. I consider this as a golden opportunity to get mentored by someone like you with exceptional knowledge and years of experience. Hopefully, I think you might be able to give me advices about incorporating AI for marketing and sales. I am quite interested to learn about new technologies, and hope you would be a great at shedding light in those topics.

I already let my team know about arranging a meeting with you. I am thinking of this Friday after 4:00pm. Hope you would be anle to spare some time for me. Please let me know of your thoughts.

Thankfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you outline your postgraduate major and progression from trainee to team lead, explain that you want guidance on using AI in marketing and sales, and propose Friday after 4 p.m. for a first meeting. The purpose is clear and the details are relevant. The background is somewhat uneven, however: you mention two previous companies but give detail mainly about the first, so the reader learns little about your second role or the experience you gained there. Your request for mentoring is also partly general (“a golden opportunity”) before becoming specific about AI. Add one or two concrete goals for the mentoring and briefly describe your second position to develop the ideas more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement, with separate paragraphs for your background, mentoring goals and meeting proposal. The sequence is easy to follow, and links such as “Then after six months” and “Hopefully” help show how ideas relate. Some connections are less smooth or precise: “I already let my team know about arranging a meeting with you” does not clearly explain whether the team is involved in scheduling, and the shift from your general interest in mentoring to AI could be more direct. The opening and closing also feel abrupt. Use clearer transitions, keep the meeting arrangements focused on communication between you and the mentor, and finish with a conventional sign-off to make the letter flow more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for this workplace letter, including relevant terms such as “trainee,” “team lead,” “foundation,” “groomed,” and “incorporating AI.” These choices communicate your experience and interests, and the meaning remains clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “got promoted as a team lead,” “give me advices,” and “a great at shedding light in those topics.” There is also a spelling slip in “anle.” Aim for more natural professional phrasing and check word forms and spelling. For example, use “promoted to team leader,” “give me advice,” and “help me understand these topics better.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “as,” “when,” and “and,” and most of the message is understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in the opening: “I Neethu Simon writing” needs a finite verb, such as “I am Neethu Simon, writing…,” while “as am the newest addition” needs a subject (“as I am…”). In “I am quite interested to learn,” the infinitive pattern is not controlled; write “interested in learning.” The sentence “I am thinking of this Friday after 4:00pm” also needs a clearer grammatical construction, such as “I was thinking of meeting this Friday after 4 p.m.” Review sentence completeness and verb patterns, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
