Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Matt,

Hope you are doing well. My name is Mandeep Singh and I am a new hire in the projects department in our organization. The HR has assigned you as my mentor and would like to briefly describe about my experience and qualifications. I have completed my Masters in Project Management from Northeastern University and prior to that I have 5 years of project experience in the construction industry. I hold a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering as well prior to start my career in the construction projects.

As you are aware that I have moved here from India and relatively new to the codes and technical norms of the Canadian project execution, I would be grateful if you could brief me about the current projects that are handled by our team and the stages at which the projects are completed. Also the Projects director wants me to get the details of the current fast track project that is due next month. If you could provide the information, it would be helpful for the meeting that I have with the client next week.

I would suggest if we could have a small meeting tomorrow morning at the conference room No 3 which is located at the 3rd floor of the company building, I can book the same for 8am - 9am in the morning and we can discuss in details your and the companies expectations and information I require to deliver the projects on time

Yours Faithfully,

Mandeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requirements: you outline your qualifications and experience, explain the support you need, and propose a specific first meeting. The details about your project-management master’s degree, civil-engineering background, and five years in construction make the introduction relevant and clear. You also explain why guidance on Canadian codes and current projects would help, linking this to an upcoming client meeting. The request for a meeting tomorrow at 8 a.m. is concrete. To develop the response further, make the help you seek more clearly about your professional development as a new colleague, rather than focusing mainly on obtaining project information, and invite Matt to suggest another time if needed. This would make the purpose of the mentoring relationship more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce yourself and your background, describe the guidance you need, and finish with a meeting proposal. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “prior to that” and “Also” help connect information. The reader can follow your main purpose throughout. Some transitions are less smooth, particularly the shift from general mentoring support to the director’s request for fast-track project details. The final paragraph also combines the meeting time, location, booking, and discussion topics in one long sentence, which makes the closing feel crowded. Separate the practical arrangements from the proposed agenda, and use a brief closing sentence inviting Matt to confirm or suggest another time. This would make the progression more polished while retaining your clear organisation.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of workplace and project-related vocabulary, including “mentor,” “construction industry,” “technical norms,” “fast track project,” and “client.” These choices communicate your background and immediate needs, and some phrases show an attempt at precise professional language. However, a few collocations and expressions are not natural, such as “describe about my experience,” “projects are completed,” and “discuss in details.” “Current projects” and “project execution” are understandable but could be expressed more idiomatically in this context. To move beyond adequate range, choose more natural professional combinations and vary repeated uses of “project” and “information.” For example, you could refer to project stages, delivery processes, or a briefing on the team’s portfolio.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the conditional request “If you could provide the information, it would be helpful” and a sentence explaining your background with “prior to that.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “The HR has assigned you” needs a more suitable article or noun phrase, and “I would suggest if we could have” is not a well-formed suggestion structure. In “I hold a Bachelor's degree … prior to start my career,” the verb pattern should be corrected, and the final sentence needs clearer punctuation and sentence boundaries. Practise accurate conditional suggestions and infinitive or gerund patterns, and divide long sentences so that each clause is controlled. These changes would improve accuracy without sacrificing complexity.
