Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to introduce myself and to make yourself familiar with my background and future realistic goals. To begin, myself Hana Benjamin and I have completed Masters in Pharmacology at Oxford University in 2023. After graduation, I started working at a research centre as an intern, where I learned about different types of case and experimental studies. However, this is my first job as a Clinical Research Associate.

I always think, setting a realistic goals can achieve any milestones and I just need your contribution to make it real. As you are aware, I do have knowledge of how experiment works but I really need a support on my biostatic part to represent my data. Therefore, I can start doing experimental studies on my project and you can help guiding me to create a data which support my studies.

Lastly, I would like to discuss this in further more detail. We can have a coffee at the best cafe in the town which is "Malbara Cafe" and meanwhile we can chat about our new project.

Let me know if you have any additional queries, I would be happy to help.

Yours Sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requirements: you outline your master’s degree and internship, identify support you want with the statistical side of your work, and suggest meeting at Malbara Cafe. These details make the letter relevant and give the mentor a clear sense of your professional background. However, some points are less fully explained than others. For example, the request for help with data analysis is relevant, but the intended support could be more specific, such as learning which statistical methods to use or how to interpret results. The meeting proposal also lacks a suggested time or date, so the arrangements are not yet complete. A clearer, more direct explanation of your goals would make the purpose of the letter stronger.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce your background, explain the support you need, and then propose a meeting. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and transitions such as “To begin” and “Lastly” guide the reader through the message. The progression is generally easy to follow, but some linking and referencing are less natural or precise. For instance, “I just need your contribution to make it real” does not clearly identify what “it” refers to, and the shift from your goals to the mentor’s help could be smoother. The closing also introduces “additional queries” without a clear reason. More direct links between each paragraph’s main idea, and a specific meeting arrangement, would make the cohesion more flexible and polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for your professional context, including “Pharmacology,” “research centre,” “experimental studies,” and “Clinical Research Associate.” This gives the letter an appropriate subject-specific focus. There are also attempts at less common expressions, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “make yourself familiar with my background,” “different types of case,” and “my biostatic part” are examples. “Realistic goals” and “milestones” are understandable, but the surrounding phrasing is vague. Aim to use standard workplace expressions and check technical terms carefully; for example, “biostatistics” is the relevant field. More accurate collocations would help you communicate your expertise and requests with greater clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “where I learned about…” and a conditional-style sentence beginning “As you are aware.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence formation, agreement, articles, and verb patterns. For example, “To begin, myself Hana Benjamin” needs a complete subject and verb, while “setting a realistic goals can achieve” has an agreement problem. In “you can help guiding me,” the verb pattern is incorrect, and “I would like to discuss this in further more detail” contains an awkward construction. There is also missing spacing after “studies.” Review sentence completeness, singular/plural agreement, and verb patterns such as “help me to…” to improve accuracy.
