Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing this letter to introduce myself with you as I am a new joinee and have been aligned under your mentorship.

My name is Owais Ansari. I have completed my diploma in VFX and Motion Graphics. I have 2 years of experience working as a motion artist in Infinx Services.

As I newly joined this company. I will need your assistance in regards to understand the workflow and the clients requirements. In my previous company, client used to send sample designs, guidelines and storyboard. However, here we need to make everything by our own. So, I will need your guidance to understand the initial workflow.

I know you have many responsibilities. I will not add any extra burden on your shoulder. So to avoid any disruption and disturbance, I was thinking to schedule an online meet in the evening. You can definately reschedule it according to your convenience.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Owais Ansari

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points and maintain an appropriate, polite purpose throughout. Your studies and experience are clearly stated (“a diploma in VFX and Motion Graphics” and two years as a motion artist), and you explain the support you need with relevant detail about differences in workflow. The meeting suggestion is also present, although “an online meet in the evening” is not very specific: proposing a day, time, or a couple of options would make the arrangement more actionable. The request for guidance is clear, but the help you hope to receive could be developed further—for example, by mentioning feedback on early projects or advice on communicating with clients. This covers the task well, with some points more fully developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: introduction, background, explanation of the support needed, and a proposed meeting, followed by an appropriate closing. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these stages, and links such as “However” make the contrast between your previous and current workplace easy to follow. The sequence of ideas is generally logical and the message is easy to understand. Some transitions are slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “So” to introduce consequences, and “As I newly joined this company” does not connect smoothly to the following sentence. You could improve flow by combining related points and varying transitions—for instance, “Since I have recently joined, I would appreciate your help…”—while keeping the clear overall structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant workplace terms such as “mentorship,” “workflow,” “clients,” “guidelines,” and “storyboard.” These help explain your professional background and the support you need. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “new joinee,” “aligned under your mentorship,” “make everything by our own,” and “add any extra burden on your shoulder.” “Definately” is also misspelled. These expressions do not prevent understanding, but they limit the naturalness and precision of the letter. Aim for standard professional collocations such as “new employee,” “assigned to you as a mentee,” “create everything ourselves,” and “add to your workload.” More precise phrasing would make your otherwise relevant vocabulary sound more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple sentences and longer structures, and most of the message remains understandable. The sentence “In my previous company, client used to send sample designs, guidelines and storyboard” shows an attempt to describe a past routine, while “You can… reschedule it according to your convenience” communicates flexibility. Some grammatical errors remain, however. “As I newly joined this company” is an incomplete dependent clause; write “As I have recently joined this company, I will need…” Also, “I will need your assistance in regards to understand” needs a corrected pattern, such as “assistance in understanding.” In “client used to send,” the singular noun needs an article or plural form. Checking clause completeness, verb patterns, and articles would improve accuracy.
