Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Aftab,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to show my respect and honour because I am very pleased to have you as my mentor.

Firstly, I would like to inform of about my educational background. I have done bachelor's in software engineering; moreover, I had worked for a very welll-known software house in my hometown for 8 months. I am very delighted to get a chance to work in this new outstanding firm as a software developer.

A mentor play a very crucial role in the progress of one's progress and success and I am very blessed to work with you. As I am a new employee I would be very grateful if you guide me about the work ethics and educate me about the new advancements.

It would be a great idea to arrange a brief meeting at a coffee shop. I will get a chance to introduce myself and we can discuss our future goals while enjoying the coffee. I have an amazing cafe in my mind which has a good vibe. It would be a grate place to meet each other and spend some quality time together. I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Anadil Noel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you outline your software engineering degree and eight months of work, explain that you want guidance on work ethics and new developments, and propose meeting at a café. The purpose and friendly tone are clear. The first two points are relevant but could be more specific: for example, identify a skill or responsibility from your previous job, and explain what kind of support with workplace practices or professional development would be most useful. The meeting suggestion is personable, but it lacks a proposed date or time, so your mentor cannot easily respond with a definite arrangement. This covers the task well overall, while some ideas remain less fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, with a sensible progression from introduction, to background, to the support you hope to receive, and finally to a meeting proposal. Connectors such as “Firstly,” “moreover,” and “As” help signal relationships between ideas, and the closing is appropriate. Some linking is a little formulaic, and the repeated focus on being pleased or blessed adds less new information than a more direct transition would. The café paragraph also moves from the meeting plan to describing the venue without giving practical details such as a suggested day or time. Overall, the sequence is easy to follow; more precise transitions and a concrete meeting arrangement would make the cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a professional introductory letter, including relevant terms such as “educational background,” “software developer,” “work ethics,” and “advancements.” The tone is generally warm and respectful. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or overly elaborate: “show my respect and honour” sounds unnatural in this context, and “a very crucial role in the progress of one's progress” repeats the same idea. There are also spelling errors in “welll-known” and “grate,” and “outstanding firm” may sound exaggerated. Aim for concise, natural workplace language and check spelling carefully; this would make your vocabulary more precise while retaining the friendly tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the sentence beginning “As I am a new employee” and the clause “which has a good vibe.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “I would like to inform of about my educational background” has an incorrect construction, and “A mentor play” needs subject–verb agreement. “I have done bachelor's” also needs a more accurate article and verb pattern, while “I had worked” is not the most suitable tense for describing completed past experience here. Review verb agreement, articles, and common verb patterns, then proofread each sentence. Greater accuracy across these structures would strengthen an otherwise clear letter.
