Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am writing to introduce myself as a new member of the team and to express my pleasure at having you as my mentor.

Regarding my educational background, I completed a two-year diploma of social service worker in Canada. During my studies, I developed strong communication and problem solving skills, which I believe will be valuable in my current role. In addition, I have gained experience in custumer service and teamwork. These experiences taught me to work under pressure and handel difficult situations.

As i am still becoming familiar with company's procedures, I would appreciate your guidance on several aspects of my role. In particular, I would like to learn deeper about the company's expectations, goals and improve my professional skills to succeed in carrer.

Finally, I was wondering if we could arrange an initial meeting sometime next week. I am avaliable on Tuesday or Thursday anytime in evening. However, I am willing to change my schedule to match your avaliability.

Thank you for offering your time and support. I look forward to meeting you and learning from your experience.

Your sincerely,

Raj.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requirements: you outline your social-service studies and customer-service experience, explain that you want guidance on company expectations and professional development, and propose meeting next week with two possible days. The purpose and tone are clear and appropriate for writing to a mentor. The background and requested support are relevant, but they remain somewhat general: for example, you do not describe a specific previous role or identify a particular challenge in your new position that you hope the mentor will help with. Adding one concrete example to each would make the ideas more fully extended and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: introduction, background, request for guidance, meeting arrangements, and a courteous close. Paragraphing supports this progression, and signposts such as “Regarding my educational background,” “In addition,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the points. The ideas within each paragraph are generally connected, and the meeting proposal follows naturally from the request for support. To make the flow more polished, reduce reliance on explicit transition phrases and connect related ideas more smoothly—for instance, link your previous experience directly to the skills you hope to develop with your mentor.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a professional introductory letter, including “educational background,” “guidance,” “company’s expectations,” and “work under pressure.” These choices communicate your meaning clearly, and the tone is suitably courteous. However, some spelling and word-choice errors, including “custumer,” “handel,” “carrer,” and “avaliable,” reduce accuracy. A few phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “learn deeper about” would be better expressed as “learn more about,” while “succeed in carrer” needs a more natural phrase such as “succeed in my career.” Check spelling carefully and favour accurate collocations over ambitious but awkward wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the relative clause in “skills, which I believe will be valuable” and the conditional-style request “I was wondering if we could arrange an initial meeting.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely obstruct the message. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain: “As i am still becoming familiar with company's procedures” needs a capital “I” and an article before “company’s procedures”; “I would like to learn deeper about … and improve” has an awkwardly coordinated structure; and “anytime in evening” needs an article and a more natural preposition pattern. Correcting these details while retaining varied sentence forms would improve control.
