Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mentor,
I am writing to let you know that Apotex Company has hired me and recommended you as my mentor.
To begin with, I am Almas Topia from India. I have completed my bachelor's degree in biotechnology at P.P. Savani University, India. At that time, I did a 2-month internship at Glenmark Life Sciences in the pharma industry. After that, I pursued my master's degree in Biotechnology at Northeastern University, Canada. During my master's, I did several experiments, including PCR, tissue culture, and Gram staining. During my internship, I also gained experience in microbial testing and colony counting.
I need your support to improve my skills. I need your guidance for career development. Also, help me understand workplace responsibilities. I am thinking of planning a meeting tomorrow after work in the Amna cafeteria, which is near our company. Please let me know whether it is convenient for you or if we should arrange another time.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Almas

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You outline your education and relevant experience, including your biotechnology degrees, internship, and laboratory work, then explain that you want support with skills, career development, and workplace responsibilities. The proposed meeting at the Amna cafeteria after work also gives your mentor a practical option and invites them to suggest another time. These details make the message relevant and sufficiently developed. To strengthen it further, explain more specifically what kind of career guidance or workplace support you hope to receive—for example, advice on adapting your laboratory experience to your new role. A more personal opening and a slightly warmer introduction would also make the letter feel more directly addressed to the mentor.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear, logical progression: you introduce yourself, describe your studies and experience, state what support you need, and propose a meeting. Paragraphing helps distinguish the background from your requests, and transitions such as “To begin with,” “After that,” and “Also” make the sequence easy to follow. The closing is appropriate and completes the letter. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and the repeated “During my…” constructions make the experience section read like a list. You could improve flow by grouping related details and using clearer references—for instance, connect the internship experience directly to the skills you hope to develop. Overall, the organisation is effective, with room for more flexible cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a professional introduction, including relevant technical terms such as “biotechnology,” “microbial testing,” “colony counting,” and “tissue culture.” The language is clear and the reader can understand your background and requests. There is some flexibility in phrases such as “career development” and “workplace responsibilities,” but several expressions are broad or slightly unnatural for this context. “I need your support to improve my skills” and “I am thinking of planning a meeting” could be made more precise and idiomatic. The technical vocabulary is useful, though you could connect it more explicitly to your new position. More natural collocations and a wider range of professional phrasing would add the precision and stylistic control needed for a stronger performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You show a useful mix of sentence forms, including complex sentences with time clauses such as “After that, I pursued…” and “During my master’s, I did several experiments…”. Most sentences are clear and grammatically controlled, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. The sequence of past-tense verbs—“completed,” “did,” “pursued,” and “gained”—is handled consistently when describing your background. The main limitation is that many sentences use straightforward subject–verb patterns, so the range is not consistently varied. For example, the requests appear as several short statements beginning with “I need” or “Also.” Combine or reshape these to demonstrate more varied structures, such as explaining how mentoring could help you apply your existing experience in the role. Continue checking sentence boundaries and punctuation as you develop longer structures.
