Write a letter to introduce yourself to your new mentor. In your letter
give a brief outline of your previous studies and work experience
explain what help you hope your mentor can give
suggest arrangements for a first meeting with your mentor
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear....... ,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to introduce myself. I was informed by the Human Resources Department that you have been chosen as my mentor.
I am pleased to inform you that I have completed my bachelor's degree as a General Dentist, and previously I worked at Dow Hospital for three years. Working at the Dow hospital has equipped me with essential skills required to work as a Dental Associate.
I would appreciate it if you could provide me with essential details on what is expected of me in this position. The rules and regulation of every department is quite different; therefore, I would be delighted to receive your help in this regard. I have previously worked in the Prosthodontic Department that is why I am unfamiliar with how to proceed with treatment procedures in the Endodontic Department.
If it is possible for you can we please have our first meeting on Saturday, 21st July. I am supposed to start working on Monday, 23rd July and therefore I would be grateful to get fully informed about things before.
I look forward to hearing your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Sara Hassan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly. You outline your qualifications and experience (“bachelor's degree as a General Dentist” and three years at Dow Hospital), explain the support you need with expectations and Endodontic procedures, and propose a specific meeting date before your start. These details make your purpose easy to understand and give the mentor a useful picture of your background. The request for help is particularly relevant to your move from Prosthodontics to Endodontics. To strengthen the response further, explain more specifically what guidance you would value—for example, training priorities or how to handle particular procedures—and make the proposed meeting arrangement more flexible by offering an alternative time if Saturday is inconvenient.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information is organised in a clear sequence: introduction, professional background, requested support, and meeting arrangements. Paragraphing helps distinguish these purposes, while links such as “therefore” and “and” show how your ideas relate. The progression from your previous department to the help needed in your new one is easy to follow. Some connections are a little mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “therefore,” and the long sentence beginning “I have previously worked…” would be clearer if separated or linked with more precise punctuation. The closing is appropriate for a formal letter. For more polished cohesion, vary the transitions and make the relationship between your experience and each request explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of professional vocabulary, including “essential skills,” “Dental Associate,” “treatment procedures,” and “Endodontic Department,” which makes the context clear. The tone is generally formal and appropriate for writing to a mentor. Some expressions are less natural or precise: “completed my bachelor's degree as a General Dentist” and “essential details on what is expected of me” could be phrased more idiomatically. “Rules and regulation” also shows an issue with word form and number, while “fully informed about things” is vague for a workplace letter. These choices do not prevent understanding, but more accurate collocations and specific professional terms would make your language more flexible and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the conditional request “I would appreciate it if you could provide me…” and a reason clause explaining why you need support. Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. However, some grammatical errors remain. In “If it is possible for you can we please have our first meeting,” the conditional framing is incomplete and the question needs clearer structure and punctuation; for example, “If possible, could we have our first meeting…?” In “The rules and regulation … is,” the plural subject requires a plural noun and verb. The sentence beginning “I have previously worked…” also needs punctuation or a conjunction between its clauses. More consistent control of agreement and sentence boundaries would improve accuracy.
