Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Kevin,

I am writing to introduce myself to you, as you are my new mentor.

To start with my educational qualifiactions, I am postgraduate from Conestoga college Canada in marketing and finance. I have three years work experience from my previous company as a senior sales manager. Moreover, I have recently completed one year course in project management.

I believe I am quite capable to perform my job duties of the job position given to me in this company, however there are two fields where I need your extended help. Firstly, I would be grateful if you help me to understand the data entry software and secondly could you please introduce me with all external departments of our company.

My work hours are Monday to Friday 9Am to 5Pm. I would appreciate if we can schedule a half an hour meeting everyday where you can help me to learn data entry software also can discuss other important things related to work.

Thank you so much for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Jass Aulakh,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you outline your education and experience, identify support you need, and propose a meeting arrangement. The details about your postgraduate study, sales-management experience, and project-management course make the introduction relevant. You also specify help with the data-entry software and introductions to other departments. However, the request for a half-hour meeting every day is quite demanding and could be framed more flexibly, while the kind of career guidance you hope to receive is not explained in much detail. To strengthen the letter, briefly describe your longer-term goals and suggest an initial meeting at a time convenient for your mentor. The main requirements are covered, but some ideas could be developed more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear sequence: introduction, background, support requested, meeting proposal, and closing. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these stages, and signposts such as “To start with,” “Moreover,” and “Firstly” make the progression easy to follow. The two requested forms of help are also clearly separated. Some linking is a little mechanical, particularly the repeated sequencing of “Firstly” and “secondly,” and the final meeting sentence combines several purposes in a long chain. You could make the flow more natural by grouping related requests and using a shorter sentence to explain the meeting’s purpose. Overall, the organisation is logical and the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant workplace terms such as “mentor,” “project management,” “data entry software,” and “external departments.” These choices make your needs understandable. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural expressions, including “extended help,” “introduce me with,” and “work experience from my previous company.” The spelling “qualifiactions” also detracts from accuracy. A more natural range of collocations would make the letter sound more professional and precise. For example, you could ask for “guidance,” say “introduce me to colleagues in other departments,” and describe experience gained “at” a previous company. The meaning remains clear despite these word-choice and spelling slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional request “I would be grateful if you help me…” and the clause beginning “where you can help me…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I am postgraduate” needs an article or a different construction, and “three years work experience” needs a possessive form or a linking phrase. In “I would appreciate if we can schedule,” the conditional structure is not well controlled; “I would appreciate it if we could schedule” is more accurate. The long sentence beginning “I would appreciate” also needs clearer punctuation or division. More consistent control of articles and conditional forms would improve accuracy.
