Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is widely believed that a balanced diet is the best way to obtain the vitamins and minerals needed for good health. Nevertheless, many people continue to spend considerable amounts of money on vitamin supplements. This essay will discuss why this happens and how people can be encouraged to improve their diets instead.

One major reason people buy vitamin pills is convenience. In today’s busy world, many individuals do not have enough time to prepare healthy meals, so taking a tablet seems like an easy solution. For example, an office worker who regularly eats fast food may believe that a daily multivitamin can make up for the lack of fruit and vegetables in their diet. Another reason is advertising. Supplement companies often promote their products as a quick way to increase energy, improve appearance or prevent illness. As a result, people may believe that taking pills is more effective than changing their eating habits.

There are several ways to persuade people to choose healthier food. First, governments and health organisations should provide clear information about the benefits of a balanced diet and the limitations of vitamin supplements. This could be done through television campaigns, social media and educational programmes in schools. People are more likely to change their behaviour if they understand that natural foods provide not only vitamins but also fibre, protein and other important nutrients. Second, healthy food should be made more affordable and accessible. For instance, governments could support local farmers or reduce taxes on fresh fruit and vegetables, making nutritious food a more attractive option than expensive supplements.

In conclusion, people mainly spend money on vitamin pills because they are convenient and heavily advertised. However, better public education and easier access to affordable healthy food could encourage people to improve their diets instead. In my view, changing eating habits is a more sustainable way to maintain good health than relying on supplements.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly identify two main reasons for the consumption of vitamin pills—convenience and advertising—and provide two logical, well-developed solutions regarding public education and economic policy. The position is clear from the introduction and is maintained consistently throughout the essay. Each paragraph is well-supported with relevant examples, such as the office worker scenario and the suggestion of tax reductions on fresh produce. The ideas are extended appropriately, demonstrating a strong grasp of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the transition between the reasons for supplement use and the solutions is smooth. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'Nevertheless,' 'For example,' 'As a result,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct parts of the prompt. The flow of information is natural and professional throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an IELTS task. Phrases like 'considerable amounts of money,' 'sustainable way,' and 'nutritious food' show a level of precision. You successfully avoid repetition and use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'vitamin supplements,' 'multivitamin,' and 'eating habits.' While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it could be pushed further into the 'less common' range to reach the highest band, but it is certainly sufficient for a high score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writing displays a high level of grammatical control. You use a variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('if they understand that...') and relative clauses ('who regularly eats fast food'), with very few errors. Punctuation is accurate, and the sentence construction is varied, which keeps the reader engaged. The grammar is consistently error-free, and the few minor slips that might occur are non-systematic. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is excellent throughout the response.
