Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is often argued that people should get the vitamins and minerals they need from a healthy and balanced diet. However, many individuals still spend a significant amount of money on vitamin pills. This essay will explain why this happens and suggest ways to encourage people to improve their diet instead.
One important reason people buy vitamin supplements is convenience. Modern lifestyles are often busy, and some people do not have enough time to prepare nutritious meals every day. Taking a few pills seems much easier than regularly eating fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and other healthy foods. Another reason is the influence of advertising. Supplement companies often claim that their products can increase energy, improve appearance and protect people from illness. Such claims can make consumers believe that vitamin pills are essential for good health, even when they already receive enough nutrients from their food.
There are several ways to encourage people to choose a healthier diet. First, governments and health organizations should provide clear information about the benefits of eating nutritious food and the limitations of vitamin supplements. This could be done through social media, television campaigns and health education in schools. For example, people could be shown that natural foods provide not only vitamins but also fiber, protein and other important nutrients. Second, healthy food should be made more affordable and accessible. Governments could support local farmers or reduce taxes on fresh fruit and vegetables, which would make healthy choices easier for ordinary families.
In conclusion, people mainly spend money on vitamin pills because they are convenient and heavily promoted. However, better public education and affordable healthy food could persuade more people to improve their diet. In the long term, developing healthy eating habits is a more sustainable approach to maintaining good health.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly identify two reasons for the popularity of vitamin pills—convenience and marketing—and provide two logical solutions: public education and economic policy. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of fiber and protein in natural foods and the suggestion of tax reductions for fresh produce. The position is consistent throughout, and the essay maintains a professional, balanced tone. To reach the highest band, you could further expand on the 'why' by briefly touching upon the psychological aspect of health anxiety, but the current development is more than sufficient for a high score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, and the progression of ideas is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'However,' 'Another reason,' 'For example,' and 'In the long term.' The transition between the problem-focused paragraphs and the solution-focused paragraphs is seamless. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the prompt. The writing is easy to follow, and the logical flow is maintained throughout the entire response.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'nutritious meals,' 'heavily promoted,' and 'sustainable approach' show a good command of language. The vocabulary is precise and used accurately to convey your meaning. While the range is sufficient and effective, it could be elevated further by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range. However, the current level is clear, natural, and entirely appropriate for the context of the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The grammar is highly accurate, with a wide range of sentence structures used correctly. You successfully employ complex sentences, such as 'This could be done through social media, television campaigns and health education in schools,' and conditional-like structures. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a high level of grammatical competence.
