Why do you think some people spend a lot of money on vitamin pills?

How could people be persuaded to improve their diet instead of buying vitamin pills?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some individuals spend a large amount of money on buying multivitamin supplements, while ignoring doctors' advice to incorporate a healthy diet. I believe certain people spend extravagantly on purchasing vitamin pills because of certain medical conditions and their diet.

People can be motivated to work on their diet through seminars and awareness camps by local authorities.

The foremost reason why people still buy multivitamins at higher prices, even though doctors have mentioned that our body can get all nutrients from a healthy diet, is certain medical conditions such as extremely low levels of B12, Calcium, Vitamin D or Iron. Even after eating healthy, some people's bodies would not be able to receive solely from diet. For example, a person with lactose intolerance can never have good levels of calcium or bone density if he or she is just surviving on a diet. The second reason is an individual's dietary preferences: vegan or vegetarian. People are becoming more aware of animal cruelty and avoiding eating meat. Some of the nutrients, such as Omega fatty acids, Vitamin B12, and iron, are really low in vegan or vegetarian options; this consequently makes a person rely on multivitamin supplements, although they cost a lot.

To make people aware of opting for a healthy lifestyle, having a good diet and avoiding buying expensive vitamin pills, local authorities can work together and spread awareness through seminars. Seminars or local workshops can work well to attract youth and can include showcasing some food samples. In this way, people can understand it better how a good a healthy food can taste like. Moreover, a price comparison of multivitamin supplements and dietary food options can also be a reflection for them.

To conclude, enough awareness among youth can be helpful to reduce their compulsive buying behaviour towards multivitamins, since people are still ignoring advice from doctors to eat healthy and avoid buying multivitamin supplements.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for supplement use and methods of persuasion. The ideas are relevant, such as medical conditions and dietary restrictions like veganism. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The explanation regarding medical conditions is clear, but the second part of the prompt—how to persuade people—is less developed. The suggestion of 'seminars' and 'price comparisons' is a good start, but it lacks depth and specific examples of how these would effectively change behavior. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'why' and 'how' with more detailed reasoning or hypothetical scenarios.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'The foremost reason', 'The second reason', and 'Moreover' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the medical condition example and the dietary preference point is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a solid band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'compulsive buying behaviour', 'lactose intolerance', and 'dietary preferences' are used correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'receive solely from diet' (which should be 'obtain solely from diet') and 'how a good a healthy food can taste like' (which is grammatically awkward). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions would elevate the score. The range is sufficient for a band 6.5, but lacks the flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several instances of grammatical errors that slightly impact the flow, such as 'some people's bodies would not be able to receive solely from diet' and 'how a good a healthy food can taste like'. Additionally, there are minor punctuation and phrasing issues throughout. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with precision, particularly when using relative clauses or conditional structures.
