How could people be persuaded to improve their diet instead of buying vitamin pills?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Doctors advise us from time to time that a healthy meal can fulfil all the vitamin needs required by our body. Despite this advice, a large number of people tend to spend huge amounts on these supplements due to social media influence and poor food quality.

However, this could be achieved by imposing strong regulations on food manufacturers about the quality standards.

One of the key reasons is that individuals are highly influenced by social media such as Instagram and TikTok; many influencers often promote Vitamin D with Vitamin K2 by showcasing their daily routine. They not only promote these supplements but also advertise companies which pays them a higher amount. As a result, many adults end up buying unnecessary vitamin supplements without a doctor's advice. Another significant reason, many meat production companies use artificial hormones to raise chickens and beef quickly to target their sales, which encourages individuals to switch to better options to fulfil their daily vitamin needs.

Governments can impose strict regulations on meat production to meet high quality standards. Moreover, authorities can encourage citizens by various drives about the high-quality checks on manufacturing and posting daily nutritional values on the packaging to encourage individuals to fulfil their daily requirements from the food rather than supplements, which are just form of chemicals and only be taken on a doctor's prescription after required examinations.

In conclusion, although people get influenced by influencers and poor food quality, governments can impose strict regulations about food quality and make producers mention their nutritional value to encourage people to eat real food and take vitamins only when there is any deficiency identified in reports.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for purchasing supplements and methods to encourage dietary improvements. The ideas are relevant, such as the influence of social media and the role of government regulation. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The explanation regarding meat production as a reason for supplement use is slightly underdeveloped and could have been linked more clearly to the core argument. The suggestions for persuasion are practical, but could benefit from more specific examples or depth. Overall, the position is clear, and the response covers all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main questions. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'As a result', and 'Moreover' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas from the problem (social media/food quality) to the solution (government regulation) is logical and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'nutritional values', 'deficiency', and 'supplements'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances where word choice could be more precise, such as 'various drives' or 'meat production companies'. There are no significant spelling errors, and the language used is natural enough to convey your points without difficulty. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items related to health and public policy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and errors are infrequent. For example, 'many meat production companies use artificial hormones' is a clear, accurate sentence. However, there are minor slips, such as 'only be taken' (should be 'should only be taken') and 'which pays them' (should be 'which pay them' to agree with 'companies'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the errors present do not impede communication. A wider variety of complex structures would help elevate the score further.
