IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Doctors tell us that we can get all the vitamins we need from having a healthy diet. Despite this advice, some people continue to spend large sums of money on vitamin pills.

Why do you think some people spend a lot of money on vitamin pills?

How could people be persuaded to improve their diet instead of buying vitamin pills?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Some individuals consider taking expensive supplements despite professional advice that a healthy diet has all essential nutrients. This practice is primarily driven by adulteration in the food industry and reliance on convenience foods. Nevertheless, it can be effectively addressed by ensuring higher food quality by introducing strict laws and raising awareness about natural healthy foods.

The dominant reason for taking vitamin pills is the lack of trust in the modern food industry. Many manufacturers adulterate food products in order to increase their profits, which deteriorates the quality of food available in the stores. For example, some dairy farmers dilute the milk to increase their profits, which reduces the nutritional value of the milk. As a result, health-conscious individuals consider taking artificial supplements along with their food to replenish the lost nutrients. In addition, hectic lifestyles and demanding careers have increased reliance on convenience foods such as frozen foods and fast foods. Such convenience-driven diets often lack essential nutrients and definitely needs additional supplementation.

However, people should be persuaded to improve their diet rather than buying supplements. The governments should raise awareness about wholesome healthy food choices and benefits of eating healthy, which is sufficient in itself to provide the body with all the essential vitamins and minerals. Similarly, parents and schools should also discourage convenience foods and promote healthy eating. In addition, the authorities should introduce stricter laws that ensure higher food quality and prevent food adulteration. This can motivate people to buy nutritious food products instead of purchasing supplements.

In conclusion, poor food quality and convenience of packaged foods force individuals to rely on additional supplements. However, with stringent quality control measures and increased awareness about healthy eating, people can be motivated to buy healthier food products which are more sustainable than buying artificial supplements.
