Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, examining why people spend money on vitamin pills and suggesting how they might be persuaded to improve their diet instead. The student presents a clear position and offers relevant ideas, such as busy lifestyles, lack of nutritional knowledge, and the role of public education and food labeling. However, the ideas are somewhat repetitive and under-developed, particularly in the final paragraphs. The essay also cuts off mid-sentence at the end, which prevents full development of the conclusion. Despite this minor truncation, the main prompt requirements are sufficiently addressed to meet the criteria for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is generally coherent with a clear overall arrangement into distinct paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs addressing each part of the prompt, and a concluding attempt. Logical progression is evident as the writer moves from causes to solutions. However, paragraphing and cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition 'Furthermore, while every food items is available...' lacks logical connection to the surrounding ideas. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in the third paragraph. Overall, the organizational structure is adequate for a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related terms such as 'vitamins', 'health advisors', 'hectic schedules', and 'public education'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices throughout, such as 'necessay' instead of 'necessary', 'good diet' instead of 'balanced diet', and 'food items is' instead of 'food items are'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary like 'fortune' and 'campaigns', but lacks precision and control, leading to occasional awkwardness. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses ('when governments and health organizations can run campaigns...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues, including subject-verb agreement errors ('every food items is', 'individuals have lack'), missing articles ('take diet'), and spelling mistakes ('Insatnce', 'encouage'). Additionally, the sentence structures in the second body paragraph become repetitive and run-on. Because the errors are frequent and occasionally cause slight difficulty for the reader, the grammar aligns with Band 5.0.
