Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often advice by the doctor that a healthy well-balanced diet contains all the necessary vitamins to live a fit as a fiddle, despite of that people still spend a wholesome amount of money towards vitamin pills. In my contrast , it is mainly because vitamin pills are easily accessible and provide a convenient way to obtain nutrition. However, this can be prevented by improving access to nutrional food products and raising public awarness about the importance of healthy diet.

To begin with, in this fast-paced lifestyle people often have very little time to prepare nutrious meal and take of their health. As a result, people find vitamin pills to be a convenient option beacuse they save time and require no preparation. Furthermore, promoting nutrious supplements through social media and advertisments createsa false impression among the public that taking vitmamin pills are more beneficial than consuming a well-balanced diet. For instance, majority of people consume iron medication as a primary source, rather than consuming iron-rich foods such as beef, tofu and spinach, which are the natural source of this nutrient.

To prevent such outcomes, government shoud make nutritious food easily accessible by reducing their cost price. Furthermore, healthcare professionals should organise public awareness campaigns to educate people about the benefits of consuming nutritious food. Also, schools could also introduce basic nutrition education to help children understand the importance of a balanced diet from an early age.

In conclusion, people tend to spend money on vitamin pills because they are convenient and require little time or effort, while advertisements can also influence their choices. However, this issue could be addressed by making nutritious food more affordable and accessible and by raising public awareness about the importance of maintaining a balanced diet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by exploring both why some people spend money on vitamin pills and how they might be persuaded to improve their diet. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The reasons provided, such as convenience and the influence of advertisements, are relevant and extended with examples like iron medication and spinach. Although the ideas are generally well developed, some arguments could be explored in greater depth to achieve a higher band, such as elaborating further on the psychological appeal of quick fixes. Overall, the task response is well-structured and fully relevant to the prompt, aligning closely with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the introduction to body paragraphs discussing reasons and solutions, and concluding with a concise summary. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. However, referencing is occasionally repetitive or slightly mechanical, which prevents the essay from reaching the higher bands. Overall, the logical flow and paragraph structure demonstrate a solid Band 7 level of coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'well-balanced diet', 'easily accessible', 'healthcare professionals', and 'public awareness campaigns'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as 'advice by the doctor' instead of 'advised by doctors', 'fit as a fiddle' used incorrectly in context, 'wholesome amount' instead of 'considerable amount', and spelling mistakes like 'nutrioul' and 'awarness'. Because these errors occasionally distract the reader without completely impeding communication, the response fits comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'while advertisements can also influence their choices' and 'schools could also introduce basic nutrition education to help children understand...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including 'It is often advice by the doctor that...', 'despite of that', 'creatinga false impression', and 'government shoud make'. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage. While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the essay from achieving a Band 7. The grammar is indicative of a solid Band 6 performance.
