Why do you think some people spend a lot of money on vitamin pills?

How could people be persuaded to improve their diet instead of buying vitamin pills?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent years, why some people spend large amounts of money on vitamin pills instead of obtaining vitamins from a healthy diet has attracted considerable attention. Although people hold different views on this issue, I believe that people often buy vitamin pills because they are convenient and believe they provide quick health benefits, while better education could encourage them to improve their diet. This essay will examine the main aspects of this issue.

To begin with, many people choose vitamin pills because they are convenient and require less effort than planning and preparing a balanced diet. This can have a considerable impact on people's everyday lives. For example, a busy employee may take a daily vitamin tablet instead of regularly preparing meals containing fresh vegetables, fruits and other nutritious foods. This demonstrates the practical importance of this point.

Furthermore, people could be encouraged to improve their diet through clear nutritional education because better information can help them understand how everyday foods provide essential vitamins. Its effects can also extend beyond individuals and influence the wider community. For instance, doctors and public health organisations can provide simple meal guides showing people how to obtain important nutrients from affordable and widely available foods. This illustrates why this aspect deserves attention.

However, it should also be recognised that governments and healthcare professionals could also promote healthy eating campaigns that explain the benefits of balanced diets and discourage unnecessary reliance on supplements. This perspective should not be overlooked when considering the issue as a whole.

In conclusion, I believe that people often buy vitamin pills because they are convenient and believe they provide quick health benefits, while better education could encourage them to improve their diet. This is mainly because supplements appear convenient and nutritional education can encourage healthier food choices. Overall, these factors should be considered together when evaluating this issue.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by explaining both why people spend money on vitamin pills (convenience and quick benefits) and how they could be persuaded to improve their diet (nutritional education and public health campaigns). A clear position is presented in the introduction and maintained throughout the response. The ideas are generally relevant and supported with examples, such as the busy employee taking daily tablets instead of preparing meals. However, some arguments, particularly regarding government campaigns, feel slightly repetitive and could be more fully extended to reach a higher band level. Overall, the prompt is adequately answered, fitting comfortably within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range, and is awarded a 7.0 for covering all parts effectively with a clear position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with a solid introduction, followed by body paragraphs addressing causes and solutions, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the text, although referencing is at times slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating distinct ideas into coherent blocks. There are no major breakdowns in logic or structure, making the text easy to follow from start to finish. This earns a solid Band 7.0 for clear logical organisation and smooth progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, successfully using terms such as 'considerable impact', 'nutritious foods', and 'healthcare professionals'. Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style and collocation, as seen in phrases like 'unnecessary reliance on supplements'. While vocabulary is generally effective and communication is never impeded, there is a slight tendency to reuse certain words and phrases, such as 'convenient' and 'improve their diet'. Minor inaccuracies are rare, and the lexical range is sufficient for some precision. This performance aligns well with the Band 6.5 to 7.0 criteria, and a 6.5 is awarded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammatical structures. The student successfully constructs complex sentences using subordinate clauses, such as 'Although people hold different views on this issue, I believe that...' and 'doctors and public health organisations can provide simple meal guides showing people how...'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and grammar errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. While the range of structures could be slightly more varied to challenge higher bands, the majority of sentences are well-controlled and grammatically sound. This corresponds directly to a Band 7.0 level of grammatical accuracy and range.
