IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Doctors tell us that we can get all the vitamins we need from having a healthy diet. Despite this advice, some people continue to spend large sums of money on vitamin pills.

Why do you think some people spend a lot of money on vitamin pills?

How could people be persuaded to improve their diet instead of buying vitamin pills?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many doctors say that we can get all our vitaminsfrom healthy food. However, many people still spend a lot of money on vitamin pills. This happens because of busy lifestyles and strong advertising. To change this, governments need to use better education and lower food prices.

There are two main reasons why people buy expensive vitamin pills. First, modern life is very fast and busy. Many people do not have time to cook healthy meals every day. Instead, they eat fast food and take a pill because it is quick and easy. They think the pill will fix their bad diet. Second, companies spend a lot of money on advertisements. These ads make people believe that pills are necessary to stay healthy, strong, and full of energy.

To persuade people to eat better and healthy instead of buying pills, we need good solutions. One way is through the means of education. Governments should teach children in schools and adults at work about healthy eating habits. Public campaigns and plays can potray people that vitamins from fresh fruit and vegetables are much better for the body than taking pills from the market.

In conclusion, people buy vitamin pills and supplements because they are busy and believe advertisements. To fix this issue, we must teach people about the concepts and basic fundamentals about the nutrition. In addition to that, government should reduce the tax on fruits, vegetables, and whole fruits, as fruits, healthy food can sometime be very expensive, so by reducing taxes , these foods will become more accessible for the normal people.
